gun rest

Here is a gun rest I made for sightin in my rifles. Got the idea from mags and stores. It cost me $5 to make, I used scrap wood. It works GREAT.

Cool idea, don't know why it hadn't occured to me. We've been doing alot of bench shooting this year and one of those would come in handy.

Thought a lot of your idea. Started in on my own. Personal rules are that there can be no trips to town. Though it's ok to visit the neighbors. Though I did have to buy the front sand bag.:rolleyes:

The group was with a 338 Win mag shooting 250 grain bullets @ 2800. Wanted to see if the thing would hold up.

No problem holding up. Was impressed that your idea worked so well. Way better than pedestal front and sand bag rear.

Do these things have elevation adjustments as easy to use as a pedestal? The two leg bolts on the front cross beam don't count.

The screw w/wing nut just behind the front rest does the elevelation adjustment. The two screws with the wing nuts on the left and right "lock down" the elevation once its set.

I've rigged the bench top so that the whole thing rotates and locks at different rotations. Far left is 200 yds. A little to the right is 300 yds. Far right is 900 and something. No guts to shot that far yet.

Shot 3 consecutive groups like that @ 200. Then fufffffff. Now it strings 'em up and down just like those holes on the left.

Am thinking that I'm not doing an even shoulder pressure thing. Thus I'm building a flat bottom attachment for the rear of the 700 stock. That will make the bottom flat like those bench guns.

We'll see what that does.

Figured the rest was good for 222 only. Well!!

So far, maybe 75 rounds of 338 Win,

2, 3-shot groups from 375 H&H both went around a inch,

6 shots from heavy 378 Wby. The old girl is holding up well.

Maybe ya otta patent the idea or at least figure a way to duplicate it.

The thing performs much much better than could ever be expected.

I'm glad yaw like and nice to see that other people are using my idea fer a cheap gun rest. I started not to post it when I did, I figured I would get hackled about it being a redneck shooting rest. I really got the idea when I was lookin at some of the ones you can buy fer $60-$100 in some outdoors stores around town. Thanks fer all the compliments. Good Huntin.

Yup it's a little redneckie but that's what its all about. There is a certain sense of accomplishment from taking an idea and turning it into a useful tool.

My next step is to set it up to mount on a heavy duty type tripod like that altimate rest thing.

The rest is as good as any I have seen or used and has completely replaced my 40 year old benchrest setup.

I don't have a link showing the stuff I used to make it or the steps I went thru to make it. I just kinda winged it from lookin at several store displays. I ya want, I can try to make a parts list and a brief discription if'n ya like. Welcome aboard Huntinggal.

It doesn't matter what it looks like, as long as helps ya keep your rifle study to get it sighted in. Sorry I haven't made the parts list ya ask me fer, with they way I work, it's hard fer me to find time to do much of anything. I will try to get it toger and put it on here fer anyone who would like to have it.

Hoonin...nix the redneck shooting rest....yours is a good idea and a whole lot cheaper than a hood of a chevy....glad to see more posts in the 'do it yourself' forum...
