How is the barrel on my Remington 760 held to the receiver? Screwed on, pinned or bolted on?

Also, is it a big hassle to switch the barrels out?

Dear Critch,
The barrel is attached to the receiver by a big nut on a stem. Take the rifle apart and you`ll see the nut. It really needs a special spanner to remove but it can be done with a modified Crescent wrench. After removing the nut the barrel just slides off the receiver. In replacing!! Be sure the nut is VERY tight. This is the headspace remember? I just did a rebore/barrel job for a customer from 30-06 to 338-06. Nice rifle for elk etc.

I have an older model 760 in 257 Roberts, and I had all but given up on haveing the barrel replaced. Several gunsmiths to whom I took it told me that it could not be done.

Now maybe I can get it converted to 7x57 like I have planned. I did not plan to use heavier than 140 gr bullets, so the cartridge length should be fine.

Again thanks.

DEar 280 IMP.

Pretty easy job!. If the present 257 Roberts barrel is still good I wouldn`t chop it up but if the rifling is bad or it wont shoot all you gotta do is remove the barrel and send it to a reborer and have the bore redone to 284. The chambering is just a matter of doing the neck as the case is about the same. This is how I do the 338/06s from the 30-06.

Numrich has the 308 barrels for $90.00, will they feed with the long action in my 760, or should I hold out for a 280? I would love to have a 257 Roberts in the 760, who has the barrels?

Well, I finally found what I needed. The barrel is held on by two bolts, one at the front and one at the back fo the slide. You pull the pump/handguard all the way back, insert a screwdriver in the holes in the tube and turn counter-clockwise, this unscrews both bolts at the same time and the barrel just comes right out.

EAsy to do.
