coyote hounds

Have owned beagles to chase rabbits and a walker hound to chase fox. Would like to contact anyone who uses hounds to chase coyote.

The same walkers you'd use to chase deer or foxes, you would use for coyotes or "booggers" as they call them in the fox pens.

Use to be a handful of guys around here that used trail hounds for coyotes. Most use greyhounds, what few are left that is.

Would like to know if anybody out here on west coast runs coyote with hounds ?? Would be happy to travel & pay fee to go along on a coyote hunt with hounds. Have called coyote for many years.]

Check out a copy of Chase magazine. You should be able to find some breeders out there that might be able to lead you in the right direction. Most of the coyote chasing that goes on around here is done in extremely large pens. 1000+ acres

Another breed that we use round here is what we call razorback walkers. Fast as lightnin they are. Most folks use walkers, ticks and redbones.
That's alotta fun..a good sport ta git inta.

Have been unsuccessful at trying to find chase magazine either in magazine stores or on internet as was suggested. (Chase mag on internet was for steeplechase racing.) Still interested in contacting someone on west coast that uses hounds to chase coyote. Any assistance welcomed/

I remember quite some time ago, maybe a year, on TV there was a guy who used dogs to hunt yotes. He was in Nevada or California, I think. He would go to the top of a high bluff and send his dogs out. While in sight - there wasn't a lot of trees but lots of sage - the dogs would run around, until some very territorial yotes came in for the attack. The dogs would then run back to the guy, making sure the 'yotes stayed close. When they were within rifle range, the guy would shoot. He would hunt all day like that. He said he had to make sure the dogs were properly vaccinated because sometimes the yotes would really tear them up.

I similin . . . sounds like a dog hunt. Would be nice if the coyote would howl on the chase so the sound of the chase could be enjoyed. I always like the stories of using the wife's house cat as a decoy when calling. I heard it pays to stay alert and shoot fast. Tnx for reply. -- C

I can attest that VARGY is one heck of a Hound Man and his dogs don't lack fer courage or speed none. Well, maybe the speed thing could be helped some.

I am working on that myself, with a cross of Plott Hound and Greyhound, bred over to an bull gator don't cha know. I calls em a hound with a lot of pearly whites going 80 miles per hour.:D

Anyways they pups should have a lot of BITE!;) ;) ;)

In MN, IA, and most of the Dakotas, a lot of the coyote dogs are Airdales. They are the biggest of the "Rough Coated" Terriers.70-80 lbs for the big Oorang variety. Big, tough and fast. A buddy
of mine from IA has 4 of them and the are a blast to hunt with.
A little proof as to how tough they are; Three years ago, a group
of us went to TN for wild boar and the guides were using Airdales
to run the pigs. They said that you don't have to worry about the
quarry killing your dogs when you use the Airdale.

P.S. You have to get them from hunting breeders.
The show stock is garbage.

I'll see if i can't get you a subscription card from some of the guys i used to feild trial with. If i do i'll copy it with my scanner and send it to ya. When i was doing it hot and heavy i used the same dogs i feild trialed foxes with. Make sure when u get yours to try and get a squeally mouthed dog, it will make the others bark more, plus makes the hunt sounds so much better.

there is a place here in mn called cannon valley kennels and outfiters they usually have all the hounds you need weather it be yote bobcat bear or coon

Have tried putting your walker on a coyote? If it runs fox chances are it will run coyote too, but here in NY we like to run at least 2-3 dogs at once. But we breed most any hound, mixing nose with speed, at it's nice to have a good cold trailing hound. We put our best cold trailer down on a good track first light and once he gets the coyote up we will pull him and put down our faster, more gritty hounds! I hope this may be some help. They're usually a mix of black & tan, bluetick,july,etc. Just about any good size hound that has what it takes!

I live in Pennsylvania and am just getting started using hounds to run coyotes. I bought 2 Plott hounds that are 5 months old. Does anyone have any advice on how I should starte my hounds. I haven't found anyone who can help me on this matter. All advice would be greatly appricated!

Back in the 1980's I had two Irish Wolfhounds.They loved running Coyotes.They must have killed over 100 in about two years.
