suggestions for first longbow or recurve

I am looking to get into traditional archery next season. I have been shooting compound bows for about 17 years and looking to change to either a longbow or a recurve. Anyone have any suggestions on a good first bow? Looking for a good bow able to be used for deer mostly but, also able to be taken out west for elk. I would really appreciate any help at all.

I am shooting a Chek-Mate Hunter II that a friend let me borrow for hunting season. It shoots great and is very well priced. I will most likely buy one this summer.

Don't go with to heavy of a bow. Look at what would be legal for elk and go with that. A 50-55 lb bow will certainly do the trick. Starting out with a lighter bow (40#) may make the transition easier. Drawing a traditional bow back uses a few muscles you don't normally use for the compound and visa versa.

be careful not to "overbow" yourself.

today's string, carbon arrow and limb technology are far superior to what it was even 25 years ago and the modern, up-to-date recurve of 40# draw weight shooting a carbon shaft arrow is probably equivalent to that of a 45-50# bow of 25 or more years ago.

i would not recommend the use of an expanding broadhead at the lower poundages though, as there are articles as of late disputing their use at lower poundages. many knowledgable bowhunters recommend solid, fixed 2 blade for lower poundage bows.
