The Remington 700 Light Varmint.
We picked up one of these from our Friendly neighborhood Remington Rep. The rifle is a stainless steel Remington 700 in one of their Kevlar reinforced(plastic) pillar bedded stocks. Bbl length is 22 inches and the bbl is about a medium weight with flutes. It seems to be very stiff and wasn't very heavy at about 7 lbs 11 oz with scope and mounts. Caliber was .223 Rem and the scope was a Bushnell Elite 3200 4X12X40 in Leupold rings and bases. BTW this scope was one of the clearest scopes I have ever mounted on a rifle. Nicer than my Leupold 4X12X40. Also has a lifetime warranty. The calibers the rifle are available in are a little different though. 17 Rem,204 Ruger, 221 Rem Fireball, 223, 22-250, 7MM-08 and of course 308. A few different calibers than normal.
We bore sighted the rifle and went to the range. We brushed and swabbed the bore between shots. After getting the rifle sighted in(3 shots) we proceeded to shoot a few groups. First was with some Mil spec 55 gr Federal ammo. It shot pretty well as the first group was slightly under an inch...just say an inch cause it was really close. Tried some Fed Premium 52 gr HPBT match ammo next. Whew...this stuff will shoot. First real 5 round group was .78 inch. The best I could do(I ain't a great rifle shooter) was .990. My friend who was doing the shooting turned in 5 (5 round) groups all under .80 inches. That's hard to improve on...even with good reloads. The factories are really making some good shooting ammo now days. This rifle shoots great off the bench. If you mount a bipod on it I think it would make a great Coyote rifle especially if you hunt with snowshoes in the winter or whatever. Trigger was much better than the last 700 we did. This one weighed 3.75 lbs from the factory. This rifle is somewhat expensive at about 950 bucks retail (we didn't pay that) and I would think the market for this configuration would be pretty small. But what do I know about rifle marketing. If you may have a need for a rifle like this one give it a check. This one sure did shoot. Next test is going to be something different. We have acquired a New Savage ML 110 II...the smokeless powder muzzle loader. Test right after the muzzy season is over. BTW it has the new Accu Trigger ...and it is great.
