I would like to buy a GPS capable of downloading maps and marine charts. A starter version is fine. I want to see if I can put a GPS to good use fishing and hunting before I upgrade to an expensive unit.

Any advise for an appropriate unit would be appreciated too.

If you want to play with a GPS I have a Magellan 310 and the optional computer interface cable. The GPS will not display a map but it will give you all the other information. You can load marker coordinates and name them and it will take you to that spot. When plugged into a computer like a lap top running most map software (like cheap assed Microsoft maps and streets $19 at Costco) it will put a curser at your present location and move with you displaying the map on the computer. The reason I got it and what I used it for was to mark where I left my truck,+ hunting spots, trail locations, decision point along a trail, cool stuff to go back to some day, and did I say I could find my truck! When I would get home I could print out the maps with markers shown for future reference. If you want it, $50 and I'll ship it to you. It is in very good shape, I have the original box and direction book and interface cable. It's fun to play with. Most all my friend went GPS crazy and spent $400 + so I let them play GPS king.

But I need a mapping GPS so that I can use it to stay off the rocks when I am fishing in the fog.

Hey Blk

My son and I bot have the Garmin Map76 unit
It works well for simple navigation and if you buy the Blue Charts it will give you some awesome detail to stay off the rocks too!;)
