Lafayette Officer on Administrative Leave after Shooting

Lafayette police have identified the officer and the car driver involved in a fatal police-action shooting last night.

Police Chief Don Roush says officer Eric Wallace shot and killed Raymond Flannagan, 48. "Last night about 9:10, three rounds were fired from officer Wallace's 40 caliber weapon, department issue, and it killed the suspect," said Chief Roush.

Flannagan was pronounced dead at the scene of the Copper Gate apartment complex, at the intersection of Poland Hill Road and Twykenham Boulevard.

Police were in the area after a robbery at Casey's General Store, where an employee had been robbed at knife-point. Police had noticed Flannagan's car, which had its headlights blacked out. A check on the license plate had indicated the car was stolen.

Deputy Chief John Dennis said after Flannagan became aware police were on the scene, he drove into a parked vehicle near Officer Wallace's car in the Copper Gate parking lot "at what we believed to be a rapid rate of speed."

"[The] suspect drove into the parked vehicle, backed up, accelerated again, and started heading in the general direction of Officer Wallace. And that's when officer Wallace fired three shots," said Dennis.

Wallace, a ten-year veteran of the police department, has been placed on administrative leave. A hearing on his status will be held Thursday morning, after an internal investigation is completed.
