Hi All,
I just got High-Speed Internet hooked up on Monday & was told by a friend that has the same service that I should dump the supplied cable modem & buy a better & faster one! The one he has is a little faster (3+MBsec) then the one they give you but, he has problems w/his dropping the signal!? I'm not complaining about the speeds I'm getting now (2.7MBsec) but, I figure a little more would be nice!:D
I've been on "Dial-Up" for years & got one heck of a deal on EXP
Basic Cable & Internet, free install & hookup for $60.99 a month for 12 months guaranteed!:) Any suggestions on what to buy?
Thanks All, Phil B.

Wish I could get some faster service but it ain't in the cards here.
Anyway...if you are happy with what you have and have no problems....what is the problem? If it ain't broke don't fix it!!! It's just like getting that really great 5 shot group......Why try to make it a 10 shot? You know you'll mess it up!:D

If your service is ADVERTISED at 3mbps down, and you're getting 2.7 down, don't complain about your modem at all, that's great speeds. You'll NEVER get the whole 3mbps down, and 90% is pretty darn good. I would keep the supplied modem, because (unless they've come down a lot) one to purchase is gonna be cheap at about $100, and that's not with much of a warranty. The one supplied by the cable company will be replaced if it ever goes bad. For $3 a month (the cost of renting a cable modem from my company), it would take 2 1/2 years to make up what you'd be paying for the other, so it's not really that much. Oh, and don't think yours won't lose the signal just as much as one from a store. It will, they all do. Not sure the reasoning, but digital internet service (DSL and Cable) both lose signals a lot and you'll find yourself restarting modems a good bit.

" Not sure the reasoning, but digital internet service (DSL and Cable) both lose signals a lot.."
I think that may be a function of the local provider.
DSL service in my neck of the woods is dead reliable- at least it has been for the last 2 years.

Well it happened a lot to me on cable and dsl...so it COULD be hardware abuse. I would say well over half the time my bandwidth is being completely used...I download A LOT.
