Barrel lapping?

Is it possible to have the barrel of a Remmy ML lapped? I bought one last year from a friend of mine. He didn't take real good care of it. It's got some fouling in the bore which is making it shoot all over the place. I wouldn't have bought it, but I was caught in a bind and didn't have a gun since mine had gotten stolen the year before. Wish I never got it, but at the time I thought I could do something w/ it. How much $ are we talking if it's possible?

Well probably about $15. You can lap a barrel several ways, but using a commerial bore paste like JB's is the best first start I think.

Put the paste on a patch or sponge and start slowly working your bore in short strokes from breech to muzzle. Just wrap a rubber band around your ramrod to know how far down you have traveled in order to try to keep the lapping consistent.

If this is not doing it to your satisfaction, then you can get some lapping compround (cutting compound) from an automotive shop with grease mixed in and try that.

If that isn't working, then a dry cutting compound of fine then coarse might be tried. Lastly would be the use of a bore sized bullet with lapping compound rubbed over it as evenly as you can get it and fire it. Three or four of these should tell the tale. Clean your barrel thoroughly and then try shooting your gun.

If all else fails, well if all fails, well, a good used gun from a friend that you can shoot first would be my fisrt choice recommendation.

Before I lapped the barrel, I would try a very thourgh "deep" cleaning. I know this sounds funny, but it's cheap to try. Plug the nipple hole with a metal or rubber plug, then fill the barrel with penatrating oil and let it stand up right for 2-3 days. Then clean the barrel as normal. You will be surprised what will come out. I have done two muzzleloaders this way and restored both to accuracy. Good luck!
