Doctor Arrested With Drugs Following Chase
Officers Follow Driver Out Of Suspected Drug House
DALLAS -- Dallas police said a chase that started outside a suspected crack house on Friday leads officers on a city-wide pursuit of a Dallas pediatric doctor in possession of crack cocaine.
Police said they initially noticed the car driving out of the suspected drug house and tried to make a traffic stop. The driver refused to stop and led police on a chase through downtown during rush hour.
The driver, Gary Lee Bryan, 41, is a third-year pediatric resident employed by Children's Medical Center and doing his training at UT Southwestern Medical Center.
Officials at Children's Medical Center withdrew Bryan's privileges at the hospital. His status in the training program at UTSW is under review.
Bryan lives in Plano, Texas, with his pregnant wife and two children. Some neighbors described him as an "average guy," according to NBC 5. Others characterized Bryan as "volatile."
After police initially tried to stop Bryan, he proceeded north on Hampton Road to Inwood and then south on Interstate 35 East to Interstate 30. While traveling west on I-30, weaving through rush hour traffic, Bryan crashed out and rear-ended another vehicle.
Now pinned between a car and two Dallas police cruisers the driver made one last attempt to flee by backing into a squad car.
With guns and batons drawn, officers surrounded the suspect's car and smashed out the windows.
Meanwhile, the driver who was rear-ended fled her own vehicle and ran onto the busy Dallas freeway.
Officers then dragged Bryan out of the car and arrested him.
A short time later, Dallas police officer Senior Cpl. Oscar Carter was seen comforting the woman, Christy Tyson, who ran from her car.
Tyson later told NBC 5 she left her vehicle because she was worried about being caught in a possible crossfire between the suspect and police officers.
"I was driving down the road, and the traffic was stopping and the car behind me hit me," said Christie Tyson (pictured, left, exiting her car), who was driving the car rammed by the fleeing driver. "I thought we'd just had an accident. Before I had a chance to get out of my car, which was less than 15 seconds, there were cops all around us with guns. All I could do was get out of my car and run the other direction so if they started shooting at each other, I wouldn't be in the way."
Tyson said she was not injured by the man ramming her car.
"I was just shooken up," she said.
After his arrest, police searched Bryan's vehicle and said they found a Coca-Cola can with a substance inside that tested positive for crack cocaine.
Police said Bryan, who was arrested wearing his medical scrubs, will likely face a number of charges including felony evading arrest, felony assault with a motor vehicle and felony possession of cocaine.
