WATERBURY, Conn. -- A woman says the Invisible Fence pet system in her yard saved her small poodle-like dog from a coyote. Mary Ellen Baranowsky said the pet containment system helped keep her dog DJ from being carried off in the jaws of what said believes was a coyote Tuesday night.

Baranowsky heard frantic barking in her yard.

"I looked out the back, and there was a coyote staring back at me," Baranowsky said.

While she is not an expert in wild animals, she said she was convinced the creature was a coyote after looking at photos of the animals on the Internet.

The gray, wolf-like canine had grabbed DJ solidly by the head and was dragging him into the woods when, for some reason, the coyote suddenly let go of the dog.

Baranowsky and her veterinarian later concluded that that DJ's Invisible Fence electric collar must have shocked the dog -- and the coyote -- as the animal dragged DJ past his property line.

Invisible Fence collars give animals a mild shock near the end of their property to prevent them from wandering off.

Her pet is recovering after a visit to the veterinarian for stitches.
