The 17HMR is the sweetest little gun I've shot. Extremly accurate and just plain fun to play with. This would be I think the perfect gun to get started with. It's so easy to shoot for the beginer, and It's target hitting ability could get any younster male or female hooked on shooting. My daughter shot mine at 50 yards for the first time and got a bullseye, boy was she impressed.Cheap fun, go have some.If you own one how do you like it.Ken.;) Here is a little clip of 17HMR hitting a coke can full of water @ 30 yards, enjoy.

I love both of mine. I have both the HMR and the M2. I just picked up the M2 about 2 weeks ago from Gander Mountain since they were running a sweet deal on it. $189 917v with 10 boxes of ammo. Right now I only have a red dot on it, waiting to get my Mueller to arrive in the mail this week. I also have two after market stocks coming as well. They do wonders on the birds :D

JR, Yeah that video is cool. I guess I'll have to set some pop cans up for long range shooting. Right now I mainly use my HMR since I have a scope on it. Makes it easy to shoot at birds around a 100yards or so. My buddy who also has the same M2 as me has a 3-9 on his and he does well on shooting birds long range. I know one of the crackles he shot up in the pine tree about 30 yards and had half his body gone. I'll post some pictures hopefully of my two stocks coming in this weekend. I believe I'm trading one of my stocks off though to my buddy who has the M2 since he doesn't have a credit card to order one. Stock + $150 for a nice .45. Not a bad deal :D Our next outting is on thursday morning, going to shoot all day long. Hopefully my Mueller will be in as well.
How far have you shoot your HMR out too?

I love my HMR as well... I have done the coke can trick, which btw was done at only 25yrds, its not as spectacular at 100 (tried it)
I use my on gophers all summer, my furthest confirmed kill was at 180+ yards. I hope to bring that to 200yrds this summer, but we will see.

Hey guys I made a nice shot on a crackle out to 75 yards and I got a skunk out to 75 yards nice job.I got a bunch of jacks this winter just not with the 17 I can't wait I brought it out with me,all shots were 250+yards.Within the next month after snow melts I'll try it on ground hogs at no more then 100 yards to start,I figure. You think it'll work on hogs.I was in Brooks Alta. last summer and I wished I had my17 I ended up borrowing a friends 22LR took my boys out shooting goghers;)

I fell in love with mine the first time i shot it. We made some targets for the 300's, i guess you'd callem heavy duty plinkers, anyway at a 100 yards knocked the biggest and heaviest of the 3 half way around. In love with it.

Hey,SeaBreeze,it is fun ey,and the more you shoot it the more you can do with it .I made a nice bullet catch that I clip a target on,it works great .;)

I have the marlin 17v in heavy barrel. Awesome little bullet. I've killed quite a few squirrels with it. Pretty challenging because its accurate but if you want any meat you have to make head shots. Lucked up last summer and killed a crow way out there. At least 200 yards. Held high. the crow layed his wings out thought i missed him. Then he jumped onto a low tree. after about another minute as i got there he fell. Down here we have nutras. They are about the size of groundhogs. They destroy marsh and resemble large rats. (maybe 10-15 pounds) Out in the marsh you can take shots out to 600 yards. Its ideal because you can see the bullet hit the water and adjust your aim. I'm yet to try it for this but hopefully will this summer. We've hit them with 22s at 200 but it just surprises them. Airboat, 25 round clip,a thousand rounds, and for your work 3 dollars per nutra.

Nutras sounds like a lot a fun.never been on an air boat, must be a blast in it's self.I did the pop can trick yesterday it worked just like the video I attached at the begining. Both at 30 yards and at 60 yards. At thirty yards the lid was blown clean off.;)

My Contender handgun HMR is outstanding!

is it accurate like the rifles are.must be nice.;)

Sure is, JackRabbit!
It shoots 1" or less, if I do my part. The G2 Contender trigger is aufull. I gota get it fixed one of these days.
Not only is the accuracy great, but it is only around 100f.p.s. slower than a rifle. I used to knock down the far centerfire ram, when shooting shilouette.
It didnt make the guys who load .44mag for shilouette happy:D . They sure did get themselfs a .17HMR barrel though;).
The longest game shot was a treerat at 87y. Not bad for a handgun! I know I can do better, but I was buisy all hunting season :(. I also turned a cotontail into a mess of "chunky salsa" at 25y.
I also noticed that the groups will shrink after 75rds, with a sweetspot between 100-200rds between barrel cleaning.
I used the thing nonstop, all spring - fall of lastyear!

Been shooting nusance birds with a RWS 17 cal. pellet gun. At around 900 fps it's good for 40 yard or so. Several crows learned the range real quick and liked to hang out at about 100 yards taunting me. Unbeknownst to them I purchased a CZ 425 in 17 HMR. They didn't even bother to fly when I poked it out the side door. But one did fly apart! Unfortunately, the other one has been reeducated in estimating distance.
The CZ American shoots as nice as it looks.
Hitting a grapefruit sized water filled ballon at 200 yrds is no problem. But wind does affect the accuracy of the little pill.

Good shooting Cossack they sure are good medicine for them pesky birds. Yeh the wind is a big factor with the little 17 gr. bullet.Gona try mine next week on ground hogs.Has anyone bin shooing the 20 gr. ammo.I have'nt yet tried it myself. Glad to read these experiances.;)

I dont know anyone who likes the 20gr bullets.
When I tested the knockdown power on centerfire silhouettes at 100y, the 17gr bullet had better results.

Cool, thats good to know.I like what the 17 gr. hollow points do to birds. The vmax bullets shoot well also.;)

i love my 17 in encore barrel and have always liked the more popular names in guns but -- i have to hand it to my dad for buying a savage rifle in 17 its a model 93 something 17hmr - it has a wood stock and not an expensive looking high dollar rig but let me tell ya - it probably has not been cleaned since he bought it and he shoots the hornady 17gr varmint express cartridges in it and i am here to tell you it shoots - surprised me but a crow or ground hog certainly dont stand a chance -- and paper well i wont admit that a gun that cost less than a barrel for the t/c will outshoot me but lets say it shoots ok - will leave it at that - 100 yard gun for sure - so tell me anyone know about savage and how they fair in the larger calibers as well - sounds like they are doing something right these days - i wouldnt tell a lot of folks but i might have to check ole wally world out in next few days to see what they got in the savage line

My 17 seems to like the 20 grain bullets alittle more than the 17 grainers group wise. I've only shot raccoons with the 20 grain bullets. They are the only way to go if you want hides and meat depending on how good you shoot.

I just picked up a .17 HMR Savage today. I put a simmons 3-9x50 scope on it and it shoots great. Looking forward to shooting some woodchucks this summer with it and some coyotes and fox in the winter. I think that the .17 will do the job no prob on a coyote because of how fast the bullet goes. Its a flat shooting gun out to 100 yds from what ive heard and then starts to go down from there but 200+ yd shots are possible. Its a sweet little caliber and im glad i bought it after reading this post and the others on .17HMR hunting and shooting.

I am shotoing the Hornady XTP 20 grain bullets and they are awesome! I tried the Remington 20 gr. bullets, because Cabela's (Buda) were out of the 20 gr., and they are shot as good as the Hornady bullets...
I have killed a mess of blackbuck (antelope) does with my Marlin 917V...it is a awsome gun.
The first one was at 100 yards, hit in the shoulder throught the lungs, heart and out the other shoulder. Ran less than 50 yards.
The second was at 154 yards, hit in the front of the neck and it exited the spine taking a piece out of it and reentered between her shoulder blades. Dropped in her tracks.
The third was with the second one at 154 yards, broadside high in the neck a few inches below the jaw. Dropped in her tracks.
The fourth, taken 3 weeks ago, at 125 yards walking and quartering away...throught the ribs behind the diaphram passing through the lungs but no exit wound found. She bucked and then ran 20 yards, stumbled and fell over dead.
I plan on killing a few pigs with this gun too...head shots only of course, but there is no doubt in my mind that it will work for hogs 150 lbs. or less.
I'm not a big coyote hunter, but I have full confidence in this gun being effective in killing yotes within 150 yards.
A couple of weekends ago I popped a couple of squirrels at about 50 yards...Hit one in the neck and one in the chest. These are the only two places to hit something if your going to kill it for food.
A lot of people don't believe this small bullet will kill larger animals but I will argue the point with them. I have done it and the placement has been 4 different areas and so have the distances.

It's good to see that everybody loves these little rimfires.I just bought another in marlin 917V and put a tasco varminter 2.5-10X40 and a versa-pod bi-pod on it.The trigger is a tad stiff but I still love it.Nice little shooter.;) Enjoy. Ken.

I know this is an older thread, but I was doing some research on .17s, and I think this confirmed that I ought to take advantage of a sale going on at Dick's (not the best place to go for guns, IMHO), and grab a Savage 93 in .17HMR while I can.

I'm sure you will totaly enjoy it.Just keep shooting it,it's tons of fun.
