realign fromt sight?

After declaring war on garden eating rabbits I was astonished at how bad a shot I had become. The old 22 had been used as a trapline gun for years and
has taken quite a beating over those years.
Still astonished at missing several rabbits only 50 feet away by 6" I began to suspect the rifle.
I've been told that even though this is a Sears model 3T rifle it was made by Winchester.
Anyway the front sight no longer sits flush with the barrel. The pad that the blade sits on, actually only one piece, is .420 X .450 and is inlaid into the barrel.
one side is raised up.
Are these just pressed into place?
Can I just tap it back into place?

OK, if I understand you correctly, your front sight is just a standard sight dovetailed into the barrel. The fact that you say one side is raised up leads me to believe the dovetail notch may be damaged. Without actually seeing the problem, it's hard to diagnose, but what I think you'll have to do is get a brass drift and tap the sight out of it's slot in the barrel. Then, with a small ball peen hammer, carefull tap the notch back into shape. Then, carefully, using the brass drift again, tap the front sight back into place. When it looks as if it's properly centered, you'll have to shoot a few rounds to see where it's hitting at the range you usually shoot at. If it's off a bit, tap the front sight with the drift to the opposite direction you want the bullet to hit. If it's hiiting to the right, move the front sight to the left. However, if when centered, the sight is not very far off, you could adjust by tapping the rear sight in the direction you wish the bullets to hit.
Not sure this will cure the problem going sight unseen, but I hope this helped.

The first sentence in the quote is correct. The second sentence doesn't appear to agree with the advice given in the first.

If it's hitting to the right, you want to move the bullet impact to the left. In order to do so, move the front sight to the right.

If you're adjusting a REAR sight, move it in the SAME direction you want the bullet impact to move.
