Shooting at gongs and paper targets is ok, but the real "rush" for some locals is to hunt chucks with flintlocks and caplocks. I go one step further and take along my .44 Remington M1858 C&B revolver. The days are longer now with daylight savings in place and the temperature is about 75 degrees. I find chuck hunting improves my stalking skills and proper sight picture for the one shot events. We use all calibers and ball and conicals. In another few weeks the hayfields will be too high to see the chucks. Who else hunts chucks with a ML?

Never really though of the goundhog as a flintlock target. But i do shoot a couple of times a years with my fully rifled 12 gauge sluggun as practice for deer season. I find it can built confidance and like to see the faces of the fellow g-hoggers with there tricked out bolts and ar-15s getting less g-hogs than me and my shotgun. Not much to carry out of the field after a barnes expander slug takes out a chest shot on a g-hog. After the beanfields are on the centerfire takes over for longer range work.
