Man shot to death by sheriff's deputies in Lakeside

LAKESIDE – A man being sought for questioning over a theft was shot to death during a struggle with sheriff's deputies outside condominiums in Lakeside on Thursday morning.

The shooting happened about 8:20 a.m. in the complex, located on Winter Gardens Boulevard near Wintercrest Drive.

The incident began when deputies pulled over two men in a Ford sedan who were believed to have just committed a petty theft from a nearby Rite Aid pharmacy, Sheriff's homicide Capt. Clay Reynard said.

Deputies stopped the car on Winter Gardens Boulevard and ordered both men out, he said. The driver surendered without resistance, but his passenger bolted across Winter Gardens Boulevard and into the condominums, Reynard said.

Reynard said the deputy and a police dog chased after the man. The dog caught up to and bit the man, and he and the deputy began to struggle, the captain said.

"The suspect ended up on top of the deputy. This is after being bit several times by the dog. The second deputy came up, using his baton, struck the suspect several times, trying to get him to comply.

"The deputy who was on the ground started yelling, 'He's got my gun! He's got my gun!' A third deputy came up, the canine handler. (He) noticed that the suspect's hand was actually on the deputy's gun and the suspect was pulling at the deputy's gun. The third deputy fired two rounds into the back of the suspect.

"At the time, the suspect was straddling the deputy, trying to remove his gun."

"I saw a guy running," said Katherine Johnson, an 18-year-old resident of the Wintergardens Greens condominiums. "He kept screaming something in Spanish over and over again."

Complex resident Felicity Benton said, "I heard the screaming. Then I heard the shots and I ducked. When I looked up and looked out I saw the guy lying on the ground.

"The paramedics tried to do CPR on him but it was a loss," Benton said.

All three deputies have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard police practice for law enforcement officers involved in a shooting.
