Hunt Suggestions??

I live in northern Utah.

Last year, my son-in-law and I, and his son, had an absolutely great time hunting pronghorn bucks. Of course, having drawn for last year, we aren't eligible again for a while.

This year we figured that we'd go for pronghorn doe. Normally, those tags aren't abundant, and this year they seem very scarce, and completely unavailable in the area we are familiar with.

As nearly as I can figure out, the Cooperative Wildlife Management Units have plenty of tags, but if you draw, you have to pay $1,800 to hunt on private land. That's out of reach.

So we're looking for a hunt that is cheap, and that is likely to produce some decent meat for the freezer. None of us are fond of deer. I'm looking for suggestions.

Is there a wild pig hunt, that is cheap, with a decent chance of success? Anything else anyone would suggest? For $1,800, I could get an Alaska moose tag, and a plane ticket! Moose are delicious.

The other thing we could do is spike elk. Elk are good to eat.

Still, is there anything I haven't thought of?

In recent years, Wyoming has had over-the-counter tags for antelope doe, I believe. Try their website or visit the office in Green River if you get over there on a PD hunt in June.

Denton, I could almost bet that you could get doe tags in Wyoming. I have never seen them sell out state wide, and I have been here 28 years, so I think it would be a pretty safe bet. Give it a try.

A Wyoming doe tag sounds like a great solution. I called the state, and they are pretty sure they will have plenty left, at $29 each, even for an out-of-stater. I had visions of a couple of hundred dollars. Marked the availability date on my calendar. Thanks. I'm smiling again.

I simply cannot believe that people will pay $1,800 for a pronghorn hunt, but I guess they do. The idea of a $10,000 elk hunt in the mountains west of Manti (fenced square mile) absolutely boggles my mind.

For $1,800, you can make a deal with a rancher, and hunt Hereford or Angus. They taste real good, and the hunt would be at least as exciting as a hay-fed bull elk that was trucked in for you. Heck, for an extra $50, you can get someone from the local meat processor to come out and shoot the critter for you....

Heck, Denton, you could save a few grand right here in Ogden. Rulon Jones has all those 5-point minimum bulls all fenced in for five grand and up.

They wander around ON the Weber rifle range. Have to call Cease Fire to avoid the dumb boogers sometimes. Just don't wander up anywhere near his fences. He gets "annoyed" if you aren't a paying customer. Jerk.

Denton if you`re looking to spend $1800 on a hunt other then deer or pronghorn Try Caribou. Quebec allows two animals per tag and success is noramlly very good. Six of us were on the hunt I did and we all fillled our tags. Another group of friends also hunted the same outfitter at the same time but in another camp did the same. I don`t know about other provences or Alaska but I enjoyed both the meat and the hunt if you`re looking for someting different.
