JERSEY CITY, N.J. - A man about to be arrested for domestic violence opened fire inside a police station Wednesday night, wounding two police officers before being shot himself, authorities said. A sergeant was shot in the stomach and a rookie police officer in the back around 7:20 p.m. at the West District Police Precinct headquarters on Communipaw Avenue, said Jersey City Police Chief Robert Troy.
Troy declined to release the officers' names pending notification of their families, but The Jersey Journal of Jersey City identified them as Sgt. Timothy Harmon and Officer Patrick Kirwin. Police said only Kirwin was wearing a bulletproof vest.
Several officers returned fire, striking Corey Harley, 27, numerous times, said police spokesman Stan Eason. All three men were in stable condition at Jersey City Medical Center Wednesday night,
"God was looking at the West District tonight," Troy said. "This is a situation that could have been a lot worse. These cops are the best there are."
Eason said Harley's girlfriend was with her three children at the police station making a domestic violence complaint against Harley when he showed up at the station. Harley, who has a prior record that includes aggravated assault and weapons charges, pulled a 9mm handgun when police told him he was being arrested on suspicion of domestic abuse, Troy said.
Officer Mike Gullace, a 38-year veteran of the force who had just three days to go before retirement, threw his body over the children when the shooting began to sheild them from the gunfire, Troy said.
Gullace will be honored for heroism at a City Hall cermeony on Thursday, officials said.
