"Los Alamos Labs, June 16, 2005— The fastest draw in the world just got faster. In New Mexico, a machine called "Z" fires not hot lead, but small aluminum plates to the blistering speed of 76,000 miles per hour in a fraction of a second, then crashes them.
That's about 9,000 mph faster than Z's previous record. Put another way, Z shoots 50 times faster than a speeding bullet, and three times the velocity needed to escape the Earth's gravity forever. But instead of shooting coins into space, Z sends them through five millimeters of vacuum to smack into various targets only five millimeters across."
...There's more, but the article just says the thing works with magnetic fields.
Lessee...76,000 mph is, um...111,416 fps. Kinda tops that hot new Ruger .204, huh? But its range is only five millimeters, so ya hafta sneak up reeeaaalll close.
