Body ID'd; Hudson Falls man charged
By DON LEHMAN
Updated: 7/26/2005 12:00:27 AM
KINGSBURY -- Police late Monday charged a Hudson Falls man with murder in the death of a central New York woman whose body was found Sunday in the Champlain Canal.
Shawn M. Doyle, 29, of 16 School St. was charged with second-degree murder for the slaying of 33-year-old Lori A. Leonard, a Chittenango woman who disappeared from her hometown May 5.
He was arrested without incident at his place of work and arraigned around 11:30 p.m. Monday before Kingsbury town Justice Michael Feeder. He was sent to Washington County Jail without bail pending a preliminary hearing at 1 p.m. Friday.
A slight man with a shaved head and arms adorned with tattoos, Doyle did not comment to reporters as he was led to and from court in handcuffs and leg manacles. He seemed nervous and spoke only to acknowledge he understood his rights and give the judge his pedigree information.
He wore a white uniform from Ellsworth Ice Cream Co., his employer for the past year, he told the judge.
A dozen police officers, including the police chief and an investigator from the Chittenango Police Department, crowded the small courtroom as Feeder read the charge to Doyle, which accuses him of intentionally killing Leonard. The charge was signed by Washington County sheriff's Investigator Bruce Hamilton.
A local fisherman, whom police did not identify, found Leonard's body stuffed in an aluminum toolbox in the Champlain Canal near Lock 9. A sand bag was found in the tool box, apparently put there in an effort to weigh it down, Washington County Sheriff Roger Leclaire said.
An autopsy performed late Sunday or early Monday found she suffocated, and her death was deemed a homicide, police said.
Police said Doyle was arrested after investigators linked him to the tool box, the kind that is mounted on a pickup truck. Leclaire said investigators had connected Doyle to the toolbox in part through items found in his truck.
Authorities on Monday subpoenaed Doyle's credit card records, in part to see if he had purchased such a toolbox, but it was unclear Monday night if that effort linked Doyle to it.
The discovery of the body early Sunday ended a 2-1/2-month manhunt in which police quickly focused on Doyle. Leonard and Doyle had dated for several months after meeting on the Internet, a relationship Leonard ended earlier this year.
Doyle had gone to Chittenango to help Leonard move into a new apartment the day she disappeared and was the last person seen with her. He drove there in his pickup truck, police said.
Leonard was the mother of two young children, ages 9 and 4. The children are in the custody of their fathers, police said.
Doyle has a history of violence against women, in particular a misdemeanor assault conviction for binding and choking a former girlfriend in Kingsbury several years ago. He is on probation for a 2003 felony drug possession conviction.
Authorities would not comment on the evidence in the case late Monday, other than to say they believe it is sufficient to convict Doyle.
"We wouldn't have had him arrested unless we felt there was enough evidence to convict him," Washington County District Attorney Robert Winn said late Monday.
Messages left at Doyle's home were not returned Monday, and his lawyer, Patrick Barber, did not return a phone call for comment. A woman who answered the phone at his office said he had no comment on the case.
The discovery
A fisherman spotted the tool box floating near the canal's surface between Lock 9 and the bridge over New Swamp Road. He pushed it to shore to retrieve it later, and when he came back discovered it contained the petite Leonard's badly decomposed body, police said. Leclaire said police used dental records and tattoos to identify the body.
The stretch of canal where the body was found is just a few miles from Doyle's home. The shoreline is mostly wooded there, but it was found near a small clearing, Leclaire said.
"Obviously the area is well-known by locals, but anyone could have driven there," he said.
Investigators from the Sheriff's Department, state police, Chittenango police and Hudson Falls police worked late into Sunday and all day Monday on the case.
State police evidence technicians were poring over the body and the container to try to find clues, such as fingerprints, hair or DNA that would link the body to whoever killed Leonard.
"We're taking every step to recover whatever evidence there is," Winn said.
Chittenango's police chief, Jeffrey Paul, was among the contingent of central New York officers in Washington County on Monday to take part in the investigation, which was based at a command post in the offices of the Washington County Sheriff's Department.
Body dumped in a rural area
The container was apparently found adjacent to property off rural Towpath Road where Nancy Arberger lives. She said she was not home Sunday when police officers swarmed the area but called it "creepy" that the body was in the canal behind her home.
"I can't believe it. All that time it was probably down there," she said, pointing to the woods behind her home.
She said neighbors on the sparsely populated road said there were numerous police cars on and around the canal all day Sunday, including officers on boats and police divers.
State police evidence technicians were still working along the canal Monday morning.
The canal is heavily traveled by boaters from all over the world on their way to and from Lake Champlain. In addition to pleasure boaters, the canal is also regularly patrolled by Sheriff's Department patrol boats.
Since the canal is drained every fall when boating season ends, that likely would have exposed the container, had it not been found Sunday.
The investigation
Leclaire and Paul said Leonard had acquaintances in the region other than Doyle and police had conducted more than 750 interviews statewide since she disappeared.
Paul said police had been in frequent contact with Leonard's family and said they were "devastated" Sunday to learn she had been found dead.
"They're a close-knit family, and they've turned to us for answers, and we're going to get them," the chief said.
Leonard's relatives have long suspected Doyle was involved in her disappearance, posting fliers around his neighborhood and holding a rally in Hudson Falls on July 1. An $8,500 reward was being offered in the case, but it was unclear Monday whether the angler who found the body would collect it.
Leclaire asked that anyone with information in the case contact the Sheriff's Department at 747-4623.

I hate stories like this where somebody is killed.
I hope they have a lot more evidence to convict this guy than what we have seen in the article.
Somehow, I don't think that the body being in a truck tool box and him owning a truck are going to be enough. Even if they were to find a strand of his hair in the box, that probably wouldn't be enough because the two of them has spent the entire day together before she disappeared.
People suck. Obviously, whoever did this is a moron for committing the murder and then a moron for dumping the body in a canal in what I would assume was a plastic truck toolbox because a metal one would not float. People like this need the death sentence.
By the way, did you notice that the two kids had fathers, and did not share the same father. Sad story all the way around. Now they will probably be split up.
Edited to add:
This whole thing has nothing to do with internet dating. As far as I am concerned, internet dating is better than finding people at bars, but there are some crazy people on the internet just like you would also find in a bar. I found my wife on the internet (i.e., Match.com), but I also met a lot of crazy women too. The good thing was that I could weed through most of the crazy people rather easily via e-mail and phone conversations, and being able to see their profile was also a good way to stay clear of the undesirable traits.

I don't understand what the hell is wrong with people! I personally still believe in, an eye for and eye... Let's stuff this sick bastard into a toolbox with a sandbag and toss him into a river. It's only the right thing to do. Sorry, I think you lose your rights when you commit this kind of malice towards someone else.

I went out on dates with 15 different women and probably corresponded with 50+ women via e-mail over a 3 month period.
Here are some of the crazier dates:
1. Law student that was attending the same law school I graduated from. I should have known something was up when she didn't have her profile up and only gave me 5 minutes to read it over after she made it visible. Anyway, I got to her place in Baltimore and found out that she had a nose ring, she smoked, and she was a lot heavier than what her photo showed. Okay, I sucked it up and went out to dinner with her anyway. All she did at dinner was argue with me about the law, which wasn't my cup of tea since I had just finished a day of working. On top of that, she was a flaming liberal that wanted to work for the public defender's office or on behalf of children even though she had a ton of school loans (e.g., they would never be paid off). After that miserable time, she wanted me to go to a party with her. I politely declined because I had work to finish and I had to get up early the next morning, which were white lies. That was the only date I went on with her.
2. Okay, this woman here probably gets the runner up prize. We went on three dates and she was calling me non-stop. On the way to Court one morning she called me because she was freaking out about some meeting with work. She had recently gotten divorced and was allegedly making $200,000 a year. She owned a house in Southern Maryland that cost $189,000 when her and her husband bought it, but the payments were so large that she needed to get a male roommate to help her pay the mortgage. I have no idea how the mortgage could have been a problem when she was making $200,000 a year. I thought about going to the courthouse and pulling up the divorce papers, but figured that if I was already at this point I shouldn't be seeing this woman (i.e., I didn't trust her). The capper was when I went to California with all my siblings to hang out with our cousins and she was continuously calling me. She called at all times of the night and I didn't always return the phone calls. Once, she called at 11:00 at night California time and we were in a bar, so I didn't hear the phone ring. That was 3:00 Maryland time. She called again at 2:00 California time that same night because she couldn't sleep without hearing back from me. That was 5:00 Maryland time. Mind you, we had only been on three dates. At that point, I decided to call it quits.
3. This is the prize winner. This girl was the best at everything, supposedly. When we first started e-mailing, she said that she had been dove hunting with her ex-fiance and that her first time she shot her limit (i.e., 12 doves) with a .410 while the birds were flying and that was more than her fiance and his father had killed that day combined. I might have believed it if she said the birds were sitting on a tree or that she had been shooting before, but that was her first time out. She was also a really good pool player with her own cue, but I beat her every time we played. I went out on three dates with this girl too and then decided that she just wasn't right for me. She even looked me up to see if I was a CPA and an attorney. After I called it quits, she kept IMing me under a different screen name posing as her 6 year old nephew. I played along for a little while, but I knew it was her because no 6 year old, other than maybe Einstein, could write that well, and even Einstein was bad with English.
Then there was the zookeeper that was a big animal rights person, but was okay with me hunting after we met for the first date. That was right when I met my wife, so the zookeeper was cut loose, but she kept calling and writing just in case things didn't work out with this new girl, who is now my wife after 2 years of dating. The big difference with my wife and these other girls is that she is pretty straight forward and honest. She had been clay shooting twice before she met me. She isn't good at it but would like to go again when nobody else in my shooting group is present. She has absolutely no intention of ever killing an animal, but wouldn't mind coming along hunting to see what it is like. She likes fishing. She and I have a lot of character traits that are very similar and we did really well on our focus test that the church gave us as part of our pre-marriage classes.
Okay, that is enough about my internet dating experience for now. I am sure I could elaborate on the stories above, but I have to get back to work.

There are several rules about internet dating and most of the reputable ones will tell you what they are. I know Match.com did.
One of the rules is always to make the first couple of dates in public, and if possible, with friends. I tended to e-mail and talk on the phone to these women for a while before meeting them out and the first dates would always be at a public place. Another thing was never to give out your actual home phone or the address where you live. Needless to say, I only went out on more than one date with 4 of the woman, and only one made it past 3 dates and she is now my wife.
Anything in life can be dangerous. The same thing can be said about meeting a person in a bar for a one night stand. Who knows what that person is like. Yet plenty of people do that in life. Hell, a lot of people get into a car with somebody they really don't know too well.

Now that is the kind of evidence that I like to hear. That makes it really tough for him to say that it wasn't his tool box.

This story remins me of when Sahra Wood was abducted years ago.
The place where the pervert said he buried the body was near a spot I use to fly fish for trout.
Stuff like this is why I dont like to wach the local F.L. news. Every other storry is about some inosent person, geting seriosly victomised. I get mad as heck, when I hear about that stuff:mad: .
On the subject of internet dating. Its how I met my first girlfreind In Florida, wich I dated for 5 months. Like Fabs said "As far as I am concerned, internet dating is better than finding people at bars".

You just need to follow the rules about internet dating, and always try to leave notes about phone numbers and people you are supposedly meeting. Think about it, the person that signed up for that internet account must have paid somehow, and not with cash. If anything happened to you, the police wouldn't have too hard of a time tracing who did it.
If you meet somebody at a bar for a one night stand and take that person home, do you really know who that person is? Does anybody else you know, know this person and their details should you not show up the next morning?
