What are you planning on hunting ? not that you need to hunt with it, I understand if you just want to own one.
If you have your heart set on something bigger, say over .30 cal., I would get a .375 H&H just because I think they have class.

I'd go with the 375 H&H as well. Like M.T. Pockets said it just has class and will take anything from varmints to elephant . I have shot everything from 20lb steenbok to 800 lb Kudu with mine and hope to get to shoot a whole lot more.

Within easy driving distance of Sacramento, you have access to bazillions of varmints.
So, I'd be scratching that new rifle itch with a Hornet or 223. Or something in between, like a Bee or a Fireball or a 222. Heck, EVERYBODY needs a .223!
Ground squirrels, fox and coyotes - oh my!

Susanville teems with squirrels, as do all the agricultural counties in lower Oregon. The hills are alive with the sound of...coyotes.
Check out the primo varmint site by Varmint Al (just do a Google) for fox and coyote in Kalifornia. LINK (http://www.varmintal.com/ahunt.htm)

i dont think you need 30 cal at this moment could be wrong. and your 270 will kill about anything you would want to kill in your area.
get something fun not. something thats gona be brutal on you.
