This was a hoot to build and is a real hoot to try to explain to someone what it does.

Well, I think it could be used as a transit. The protractor would give you angles, and when it was on 0 and you looked through the spotting scope, whatever you was looking at should be perfectly streight across from the scope.

HEY DOC

I THINK ROY DIED AND WENT TO HEAVEN, HE HASN'T MADE A POST IN A COONS AGE.

THAT WAS WHAT I THOUGHT IT WAS FOR ALSO, TO MEASURE ANGLES, BUT I DON'T KNOW HOW THAT COULD BE DONE WITHOUT MARKING THE LENS SOMEWAY. JUST CENTERING THE OBJECT IN THE LENS WOULDN'T BE VERY PRECISE.

OH WELL.

Am supprised that so many didn't know what it was.......

Its my version of an ACI (Angle Cosine Indicator) and is calibrated in the cosine of the angle 90 ldegrees being one.

When one is shooting a long ways and either uphill or down hill you multiply the range finder distance by the cosine of the angle to get effective distance the shot has to travel.

I try to center the target in the center of the scope then see what number the ballistic tip it pointing at. Then multiply the range finder distance by that number.

Where I was going to make the shot the values were either .98 or .94.

Son did all the shooting that day and the shots were about 100 yds thus the gizmo was not to useful, as are most of my inventions.

For anything under 500 yds and your target is deer or elk the cosine doesn't make much difference. For loooooong shot its a deal breaker.

When I get really serious, I'll purchace a scope or rifle mounted ACI. The wind blows that bt around a bit.

opti-logic has a new? range finder that will compute the angle cosine for you and tell you the angle cosine corrected yardage. i think they are around $400 for a 1000yd model.

i have the aci model from sniper tools for my 1000yd gun and it works well. the only thing i have to do is all the math in my head.
or carry a calculator in the field.

how did people like carlos hathcock and simo hayha ever get by? they didn't have half the equipment we do today. i think i know why. they were better shots.

whenever i go hunting nowadays i have 20 pounds of equipment to support my light weight gun. is something wrong here? :D

possibly the only thing your gizmo would require is a crosshair, that would make it more precise. maybe, huh?

p.s. glad to hear the rumor of your demise was only a rumor.:)

yeh, it is good to hear I'm alive:D

One difference, I think, is that those fellas shot a lot more than most of us do now. However, I've been watching some buffalo gun shooters shooting at 500 meters, with the barrel supported by cross sticks. One ol' boy's 5 shot group was well under MOA. Go figure...

When I was running a couple of hundred rounds a month through my old 270 during the height of the jack rabbit days there wasn't anything safe within 420 yds regardless of wind/angle etc.

Now it just isn't so.

Am getting a long range rifle in a couple of months (if the proto type works out) that will require a good ACI and the "rifle level indicator" and precise mounting of the scope level wise. Me thinks I'm going to the next level.

I should be a real bbl burner but should reach out and touch. Will work up the load, work up the drop chart then shoot at nothing but game (Yotes and smaller) to prolong live of the bbl.

All of these gizmos are just practice but kind of fun.
