Is the muzzle report on a 22 hornet or 218 bee that much lower than a .223 remington. Would it be worth it for me to get a hornet or a bee for a semi populated area? What are the ballistics like for the smaller rounds?

Hey has anyone tried out the new Savage/stevens model 200, budget rifle?????????????

To my ears the hornet is at most half the noise of a 223, which makes it a great 150 meter or so varminter. Great for the more populated areas, for both noise and backstop wise. If you reload, you're under half the powder burned to boot. It'll be a foot or so low at 200, depending on your load, Waidmannsheil, Dom.

With the old 40 gn. Hornet bullets like I used to shoot the max. point blank range, within plus or minus 2 1/2 in., the max. range was 210 yrds. at 2,800 fps. With the new 35 gn. bullets and some of the newer powders it should be alittle more now. The Hornet will do the same job at 210 yrds. as the .223 does at 280 yrds. The Hornet is the original long range varmint round and is still a good choice today, especially where noise is a consern.

A .221 FB will be right in the middle using much better brass than either the hornet or the bee.

Can't find any .22 hornet rifles, (except a single shot Marlin or NEF Handi rifle.) What manufactures should I be looking at?

If you handload, I strongly recommend getting a .223. While factory ammo is far louder in .223 than in .22 Hornet, by handloading with BlueDot powder you can reduce the report and recoil very significantly, and the accuracy and velocity will be as good or better than the Hornet or Bee. Plus you have the option to load up to full power if needed.

When I first read the praises of BlueDot in the .223 I was dubious, but after I tried it in my 10" T/C I was hooked. A google search will bring up plenty of sites with load data, but here is one by our fearless leader:

Handgunner, look at CZ and Browning. Both make (or did very recently) rifles in 22 Hornet chambering.

HANDGUNNER, don't overlook a 222 if you come across one.

I did a search for 222 at this site: http://www.gunsamerica.com/
and came up with 4 pages of that caliber.
Here are some reasonably priced examples:

If you want a good shooter I would recomand the CZ. I picked up my first CZ a week ago today and for an off the shelf rifle it is far supperior to any other gun I`ve ever owned, and at the present time I own 3 diffetent rounds in .17 cal. centerfires, 5 different .22 cals, 2 different .25 cals, 3 different .30 cal. and a .411 cal.
I have had guns that shoot as well as the CZ, but none that fouled less or cleaned as easly. That to me mean it has a very smooth bore. It come with a single set trigger and scope rings. Around here it`s going for $519 for the CZ American, moled 527. It has a pencial barrel and is a very lite weight gun, great for a carry gun. The accuracy is the best I ever got from a factory gun.

Savage has an awesome new rifle in .22 Hornet!!!

http://www.savagearms.com/40Varmint.htm

or

http://www.savagearms.com/12Varminterleft.htm
in .223, 22-250, or 204

I like the .22 Hornet but the other choices above have a longer 26" inch barrel vs 24" for the Hornet, both would be great rifles
