View Full Version : Skinny's "Bug Out Bag" revisited....

Way back when, our fearless Skinny Shooter posed a question about Bug Out Bags and what you would have in them. You know, the stuff you would want to have if you had to bail at nearly a moments notice if the proverbial "caca hit the fan". In light of recent events, specifically Huricane Katrina, I thought this subject worth revisiting. It is quite obvious to me that many don't give a rat's ass about the subject and got caught with their pants down and some even payed the ultimate price. It's also obvious that our Government doesn't have the capacity to do s**t for us during and sometime after a serious or catastrophic event.

Now, with hindsight, what will you be doing about self sufficiency, what will you store, how will you store it? In short, I will improve upon a backpack type storage containing the necessary items for a week or more survival if I am forced to leave my residence. I will also improve upon and increase the size of a storage system allowing me to survive in, outside of, or on top of my home should I be cut off from the rest of the world.

I would love to see an exchange of ideas on the subject.

Thanks to TreeDoc for bringing this up again.
Am still eating up my Y2K stash so am set for a year or so ;)

Seriously though, I was going to do this about a week ago but never got to it. :)
I'll add to the topic by mentioning we have been keeping supplies in the bunker for Winter power loss. Our hill always seems to have that trouble a few times during the Winter months.
We're using some hard containers and Cabela's bags to store our gear. If vehicles are working and you can travel, any of it can be put in the Trailblazer. If not, we'll have a seperate way of traveling on foot with minimum supplies for a few days.
It's a bit on the cheap side but this radio does work well and we'll be adding it to our list: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0033921620106a&type=product&cmCat=search&returnString=_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&hasJS=true&_D%3AhasJS=+&%2Fcabelas%2Fcommerce%2FCabelasCatalogNumberFinder.giftCertificateURL=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Ftemplates%2F giftcertificate%2Fgiftcertificate.jsp%3Fid%3D0005586990011a%26podId%3D0005586%26catalogCode%3DIB%26n avAction%3Djump%26indexId%3D&_D%3A%2Fcabelas%2Fcommerce%2FCabelasCatalogNumberFinder.giftCertificateURL=+&QueryText=grundig&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fsearch%2Fsearch-box.jsp.form9&N=4887&Ntk=Products&Ntx=mode+matchall&Nty=1&Ntt=grundig&noImage=0&returnPage=search-results1.jsp
A water filter is also on the list which will help to minimize the weight of extra water. Similiar to this one:

We have Lodge cast iron (plenty of hardwood for coals) and coleman type stoves. We have 3 gals of coleman fuel at any one time stored away from the house in an outbuilding.
Hate to think about it but MRE's are about the best (?) for packing the most amount of nutrition in the smallest space.
I'll post more about our specific list later on. Both for home and for bugging-out.

I had always thought about having a BOB(Bug Out Bag) at home, or BHB (Bug Home Bag) in the car to get home. For years I've always put it the "To Do Someday" pile, but I have been reading posts from people in LA & MS who's forethought made all of the difference in their survival.

I'm currently putting together BOTH a BOB & a BHB.

(I hope that the invitation below doesn't violate any board rules, if I does, please tell Me and I will remove it.)

I'd also like to invite anyone interested to Come over to AR-15.com (http://www.ar15.com) & check out the "Survival" section for more information than I could possibly post here, and some darn nice people.....The rest of the Board is great too.

Mine is basically my camping bag, that stays packed. My general theory is I can use all the supplies while camping, and be able to refine and constantly update my gear. Also, I figure that if I can camp in the woods, camping in a motel/back of a truck/someones living room should be the same or easier.

About the only changes I would make is to include cash hidden in various parts of the bag and in the house to grab when I 'bug out' to survive away from the SHTF region. And hell, its money... its good everywhere.

My other pack is my daypack that goes with me when Im outdoors. Its more or less my Bug Home bag as its made to keep alive for one or two nights and get me found or home. A majority of my money for Survival reasons gets spent on it... since I use it so much more.
