Bow season opens in September here in Missouri and I was wanting to know where I should hunt. Should I hunt around water, thick timber or what? Some people have told me "you won't take a nice buck during early season" what do you think.

I think you can take a nice buck during early season. Why Not? They won't be quite as wary early as they will be after they have been pressured.
They still are in a heavy feeding pattern and the does are not in estrus for some time yet.
I would concentrate my efforts around food sources during the early morning and early evening. Field edges, etc.
Just my 2 cents.
Good Luck!
I figure the best time to go is when I get to go!
Make the most of it.

Any time you can hunt is the best time to hunt:D

Like already said, I would hunt aways off from food sources. Stay back into the cover a little, where they might stage up before heading into the feed at dark. Look for good trails, and then place your stands near them. A trophy buck can walk by anytime, but you'll never know unless your in your stand. The only downside to early hunting to me is the warm weather. I prefer to let my deer age for at least a week. And that is hard to do when it's in the 70's.
