this actually happened several months ago, but today ran into the guy again today.

a few guys standing around at the local indoor range/gunshop.

New guy walks in, looks over stuff for abit, older gentleman starts really looking over the .45's

The range owners had a NIB unfired series 70 M1911A1 on display, along with several other modified series 70's, and an assortment of newer models both modified and stock.

this guy starts in wanting to buy the NIB series 70, so he can "strip it out, modify it and trick it out for compition shooting".

2 of us commented that if he wanted to do that, to buy one of the already modified series 70's, he'd save alot of cash, and wouldnt be ruining a classic collectors piece.

Shop owner also told him the same thing, and basically told him he wouldn't sell it to him.

guy got a little miffed, and left.

ran into this guy today at a local milsurp shop, this time he's wanting to buy a very nice finnish marked 91/30 in very good condition. Stated when he got home he was going to cut it down and make his own "m44 carbine" from it.

shop owner took it back from him (hadent done the paper work yet), and showed him the regular 91/30's he had, and the 5 m44's he had already in stock, all were cheaper, and 5 were what the guy actually wanted to begin with.

He ended up leaving without anything, and on the way out he heard me laugh. wanted to know what was so funny.

I told him i just thought it was amazing how someone so stupid could manage to live as long as he had. Well that didn't go over very well, and he damanded an apology.

Told him i will apologise when i do something wrong, but i'd be damned if i was going to apologise to someone who was being a ****ing idiot.

he left then, and we all got a chuckle out of it, but it does seriously amaze me how dumb some people can be, even when it's been explained to them why it's dumb in the first place.

Andy,

That was hilarious. If it weren't for government and civilization, those people would be dead a long time ago.

Hmmmm....I understand the spirit of your concern over what you consider to be a "gem" that you think shouldn't be mistreated but in my eyes a Colt 1911 70 series is a sloppy POS and I wouldn't think twice about tearing it down to build a race gun if that's what I wanted to do. If I decided to take a hacksaw to a Grade V Browning Citori to use it as a home defense gun, what busines is that of yours?

My suggestion would be that if you want to save all the collectibles, which would be wonderful I might add, then pony up the dough and fill your safe. Don't legislate and chastise a fellow gun owner for his personal desires.

To each his own.

i agree that you should be able to do whatever you want with what you buy, and the finnish 91/30 is debatable.
However the series 70 1911, whatever your likes or dislike, was new in box, unfired, and production stopped 40 years ago.
it is absolutley irreplaceable. Sure series 70's are still around but not in that condition, and except for museum collections, they damn sure aren't unfired.

it would be like finding an original 1932 coupe, factory new, undriven, and stripping it down for a streetrod.

The grade V browning Citori, is replaceable as they are still being produced to my knowledge, big difference.

As for me buying it, if i had the cash i would, i already have $3k worth of stuff down there in layaway, with about a third of it paid off.

as for whether it was sold to him or not, that's between him and the shop owner, and i had nothing to do with whether it was sold to him or not. Had it been i would have thought it stupid sure, but it would have been his property then, and he could do what he wants with it, no matter what I or anyone else thought of it.

he may think i am an idiot, and i think he's an idiot, but thats the great thing about opinions, everyone has their own. At no time, did i comment about his selection until he personally asked me why i chuckled. He asked, i answered, if he doesn't like my answer, tough.

I made one unasked for comment, I poointed out to him there were other sereis 70's there available, that were not collector pieces, simply because it is possible he didnt know that one was such a piece.

If i see something i consider to be stupid, first i'll try to find out why it's being done, hell i just might learn soemthing.
If i still think it's stupid after finding out, then your damn right I'll say something about it.
