Hornady 40gr VMax performance

Loaded some 40gr VMax bullets in my PWM (pecker wood magnum) that's a 222 Rem.
Using a little less than 23 gr of 10X, great velocity and accuracy is as good as the old Mod. 722 can do. I really appreciate that 26 inch bbl on the old girl.

Have some house pecking flickers. They are exploxive on them @ 50 yds.

I also live in an area where the city folk drop off their extra/unwanted cats. I'd rather see bunnies and gambel's quail in the back yard than those cats.

Anyway. @ 45 yds couldn't find an entrance wound and there was no exit wound. Was impressed that bullets performance.

Hope they work well on the yotes.

I normally have my hunting buddy load me up some 40 grain pills that he makes up but i shot them all up this summer. I had to buy some factory .222 remington classics in 50 grain at the gander mt store. Even there they only had one loading for the .222. So i got 2 boxes as i needed some brass anyway.

I sold my .17 rem and bought the .222 in model 700 and like it better but miss the no exit shooting the .17 gave me. I did not like the .17's extreames in accuracy or trying to keep the barrel clean.

I loaded up some 40 gn. Serrias for my .222 Contender, 10 in. barrel. They are very accurate, but what you said about the Hornady not exiting has me worried. I got 1 groundhog with the 32 gn. Serria bullets in .204 and no exit wound at 165 yrds. These bullets will not kill a coyote. I`ve hit 4 of them with this bullet and knocked 1 of them down hard 2 times and he still got up and hobbled away. If you don`t have an exit wound on the small stuff, don`t even try them on coyote. I think I`ll keep these 40 gners. for groundhogs and load some 55`s for coyote, I really hate for them to get away. :(

I bought some 40 grain Sierra HP's for my .223, but beings they weren't boat tail I find them EXTREMELY difficult to seat on my progressive press.


I've chamfered the hell out of the case neck, dabbled lube on the bullets, and they still are just a pain in the neck. I like their performance on praire dogs, I was going for a smokin fast round to go out to about 100 yards, maybe I'd try the V-Max and see if its a little longer and the boat tail will sit easier.

I've read where some people like that no exit idea. Less hide damage. But they gotta get in far enough to do the necessary damage.

Maybe this weekend I'll get the chance to try them on one of them there yotes :D

My only other option is the 338 Win w/250s. But I'm afraid that they'll just punch a 338 hole.:rolleyes:

Last year my yote partner shot one from the south end with a Horned and one of thos little VMaxsand it worked perfectly. Instant kill @ 50 yds.

Let me know how they do on coyotes. They was the snow is here now I know that I won`t be running the hoe untill after the first of the year sometime and if they aren`t heavy enough I`ll have time to load some heaver bullets. I won`t get the velosity you will because I`m fireing them from a 10 in. barrel so they won`t be quite as explosive in mine, but real close.
