What now?

What is everyone doing now that hunting is, more or less, over? I'm looking forward to doing some fly fishing on the South Fork, Boise River and maybe some short day hikes up in the same general area.

I am hoping to chase coyotes around until next fall.. lol.. come spring the gophers will be a world of hurt.. my .17 didn't get used enough last year.. and hope to do some shed hunting as well.

Sounds like a plan to me. By the way, what's the effective range on those .17s? Comparable to a .22 lr?

I still have close to 45 days of hunting season left. 75 days if you count crows and snow geese. After that and the end of tax season (i.e., April 15), I will be working on my boat to try and get some fishing in, and probably working on my dad's Chevy Cavalier because it has an exhaust leak that causes it to lose power. No time for working on cars right now with hunting season in and the weather being pretty cold. Last but not least, I am going to make sure this house is completely finished and maintained so that I do not have to worry about it next hunting season.

Tater... the .17HMR can't compare to the 22.lr.. at 200yrs I have no holdover on gophers.. and they drop on the spot.. there is not specatular red mist like the .22 centre fires.. but at least it is quiet!

I've been kicking around the idea of picking up a barrel for my Encore. Sounds like a real fun round.

If I get my sunken tank blind pumped out and have any decoys left now that the Nor Cal flooding has subsided, I'll have till the 29th of January for Ducks and Geese. Headed up tomorrow night to see what's left of the spread.

As for the .17 HMR, I think it's a must have Tater! I waited for some time before I bought mine and ended up with a real peach of a single shot. It's a Winchester 1885 Low Wall with case hardened receiver, octagonal barrel. It's cool but cost more than any subcaliber should cost! That's OK, it's pretty and shoots utterly fantastic! I was amazed at how the .17 shoots....you just cant even compare it to a .22LR. Like toxic said, you aim at something 200 yards out, you hit it. No holdover at all! It kills squirrels at that range like a .22LR would at relatively close range, not explosive but definitely DEAD!

I'm gonna get one soon, just not soon enough. I have a truck and a van to fix before I can even think of spending that kind of money on a gun unless I want to end up divorced.

I still have a black powder deer and two bow tags left to fill this month and then I will start hatching quail for dog trainers and myself.

Last weekend of bird season here. Will get out and chase a few around. After that will do some coyote hunting, and on nice days sneak out to plink at some PD's. Like to get in some x-country skiing and towards end of April, head back to Idaho to do a little spring bear hunting.--tr

Busy trapping right now and silly season is approaching for the coyotes, so I will get a little target practice. Then it is spring beaver time and time to start the baits for the spring bear season.................

Of course, there's the weekly IDPA and USPSA shoots along with some skeet for fun......

Shoot..there's still alot of trappin, rabbit & squirrel huntin to do. Goose season is in till Feb too.
Fore ya know it...fishin is on and spring gobbler'll be next...now I'm lookin forward to that this year fer sure.

well hunting season is still full on for another two weeks here, but tater, man being a redskins worry wert is a 7 days a week job, so thats what im doing for another week worrying 24 hours a day about how they may ruin my life next weekend
