3 wheelers Vs. 4 Wheeler

Well after 5 or so years of busting my hump dragging deer almost a mile up and down some pretty long hills I finally figured out a way to get an ATV without breakign the bank.

I bought a 3 wheeler

1984 Yamaha DX225 ATC

Anyone else here still have a 3 wheeler or is everyone got the new fancy ATV 4wheelers?

There was a reason they quit makin those 3 whelers. Thye be dangerous. Now in the right hands with safety in mind..you'll be just fine. I do have a Polaris 500 4 wheeler though. Neat machine.Even has a wench...er I mean winch on it:D :eek:

yeah I remember the dangers. I am not really going to be using it to race around on. I have a bad back and the place I hunt is a long ways in the woods. Makes for a miserable week if I shoot a deer and have to drag it out without help of an ATV, and I don't really have the $$$ to drop several grand on a new or used 4 wheeler. I got this Yamaha 3 wheeler for $550 and it appears to be in as good shape as some of the used 4 wheeler for a lot more$$. I think 4 the price difference I can just make sure I am a little more careful when using it

Last year Dad and I used a hand truck with pnuematic tires to haul our deer out and I still wound up hurting pretty bad for jsut about a week after that day.

I will probably get a little fun riding in during the off season but mostly it'll be for hunting.

The nice thing about this Yamaha is it has a rear suspension. A lot of the old 3 wheelers had no suspension in the rear this one does.

Anyway I pick it up tonight. I guess I will get to ride it a bit and report back on how I like it.

If the only thing it does is hauls the deer out of the woods without making my back hurt for a week I will love it :D

well I picked it up last night. If it is really as good as it sounds I think I got a good deal. Starts on first pull everything works, has full front and rear suspension, and is really quick.

Good for you man. Just remember to be careful on the side hills etc. Hope ya get a big 'un next year. You know....One that this sucker can't even pull outta the woods. Just camp next to the critter and eat him there. :D

Are you going to drag deer with it? I hope you don`t have many hills, and theres no mud or wet grass. I rode a lot of 3-wheelers back in the day. No problem going up or down hills, but going down at an angle never worked out. The front forks would pack up with mud and make it a longer day than i had planned too. Still have a couple scars from my screamin` Honda 250R, lol. :D

I have known several people with 3 wheelers. All got hurt at some point. If you are very careful, load deer right, only go streight up or down hills it will do the job needed.

I noticed in your last post "and is really quick". That is the first sign of danger. Remember, the faster you go on ANY atv the more the blood flow to the brain is cut off.:D I have done MANY foolish things on my 4 wheeler over the years and only had minor injuries. I count myself lucky so far.

ATVs are super tough. They just keep going with very little work. They are great for hauling out deer and are a blast to just ride. The rider ( at least in my case ) is the weak link and the one most likely to be damaged.

Just remember....don't ever put your foot down when you turn. I can't come close to an accurate count of how many people use to do that and that back tire will pull you right off the seat and go right up and over your back and head....and watch the hills.

madman.this probably won't be of any help to you now you got 'wheels' but after finding a good hunting spot with that dreaded hill to drag back up...(even if not draggin a critter)..I figured out this...I took an old boat winch laying around..put as much of parachute chord (small diam) onto it and attatch this to my critter..I unwind the cord as far as a good tree will let me and hook the winch part there....sit and wind....works pretty good up some of the big hills I have had to mess with...still lookin for that reasonable used quad....and I still have my cell ph to call the big boys out...I think they enjoy the drag...lol..

Thanks for all the replies guys. The comment on really quick was more or less thrown in there because the only place I had ridden it was on the subdivision road in front of my house and through 1rst 2nd and 3rd gear it was quick from one end of my acre and a half to the other end, on flat ground she was moving prolly around 35 MPH, remember I said quick, not fast. I rode it a little in the snow in my yard while my son payed on his gocart this weekend and still haven't had it out of 3rd gear. Can't take riding it for long the ole back just won't let me much any more. Anyway I got a battery for it and the electric starter works fairly well, the start button seems like it has a slight connection issue but if you push it hard enough it makes contact and start right up.

Not planning on riding in much mud mostly a long straight grade down through the woods on a pre-existing trail to the hunting spot and a long straight uphill grade back to the truck. I know my back will be thankful come next hunting season.

I will post back later about how it handles on the hunting property. I am working on a low set trailer to tow it with right now. I am very leary of ramps and putting something like that in and out of the truck bed so I got a trailer that sits really low to the ground, I just need to do a little work on it, once it is done I am going to the 3 wheeler down to the hunting property and take a ride to my normal spot just to see how she handles the trip and maybe look around for some antler sheds.
