405grs of shot?

For the mathematically brilliant, of which I'm not one, :D what is a equivalent oz fraction to 405grs of shot?

I was opening up a few hand loads to test them for powder weight, shot weight, and to examine the type of wad used etc., from a flat of shells that a fellow gave me prior to moving back east. I wasn't about to shoot them without pulling at least one or two shells from each box to se how his drops went.

Now the powder weight was fairly consistent with 19.4 to 20gr of Red Dot, if you can call that consistent.:rolleyes: The lead weighed 405grs to about 417gr. Hard to be perfect with reclaimed shot I know. Pretty hot loads I'd say, but shootable. He loaded for sporting clays and liked velocity.

Ok get out your calculators..what shot weight was he trying to achieve? 15/16oz, 7/8oz..?:)

12 Ga Guy The answer is either 7/8 oz on the heavy side or 1 oz on the light side . A 7/8 oz load weighs 382.8 grains and a 1 oz load of shot weighs 437.5 grains. So your weights that you have there fall right in the middle of these two weights. Flip a coin on which one he was trying to achieve! I would think 1 oz would be the one because 7/8 ounce is a tad light for sporting clays. Regards Roy:)

To be exat .92 ounces is what 405 grs converts to. 7/8 oz converted to a decimal equals .875 ounces. So, it looks like it is a little closer to 7/8 than it is to 1. However, 405 grains is extremely close to 26 grams and ends up being 26.24 grams to be exact. I believe that a 26 gram load is required for international skeet and international trap. AA even sells 26 gram and 24 gram shells.

What was he trying to load the shells for? I checked Alliant's website for reloading data and they only have it for 24 and 28 gram loads. I checked out both and it seems as though the 20 grains of Red Dot over 26 grams of shot isn't out of line. However, it depends on what primer was used, and that can sometimes be a little difficult to determine.

Thanks for doing the math for me!:) By the sound of it the 15/16oz load may be exactly what he was trying to achieve. That would be heavier then the 7/8, and lighter then the 1oz.

As I mentioned he was a big sporting clays buff. Actually sold me a flat of factory AA Super Sport shells 1oz 1350fps for $20. I also got 2 flats of factory Fiocchi multi sport 3dram 1oz loads for the same. I couldn't resist those prices even though they are a little fast for trap shooting. He threw in his handloaded shells. 2 flats of AA hulls, with this load I was mentioning. As well I got a couple of flats of factory 7-1/2-1/8oz Challenger shells, approx 5lbs of powder, and about 1000 AA hulls once fired. Sweet!:D

I just hope he dosen't move back, before I get to shoot them all. One winter in Ontario, and he soon may be....:rolleyes:

12Ga Guy, Sounds like you got a heck of a deal! Geez wish I could luck into a buy like that. Cheap 12ga factory shells go down here for at least $34.00 a flat if your lucky to find them at that price!:)
