Rem 597

Over the years I've shot many (and owned some of them) types of 22 semi-auto rifles. Couldn't do without a Ruger 10/22 but I'm really impressed with the Remington Model 597. It is a real tack-driver with Winchester DynaPoints at 50-yards and I like the way the synthetic stock feels in my hands.

A friend of mine can do miracles with a 10/22 trigger but I've never messed with the trigger on the 597. It has a very hard pull (read lawyer-trigger) and not conducive to shooting accurately from any place besides the bench. I've heard of some guy in the midwest who can tune them for you but have lost the information.

Anyone else have an opinion on the 597 and have you ever tried any trigger adjustments yourself?

I have a 597, strongly suggest you buy a Volquartsen Target Hammer,$30.00, and a trigger shoe from a paintball store, I believe size 9, $4 to $6. 10/22's are neat rifles and the after market is endless,but I think you'll find that the 597 will shoot circles around it out of the box. Also, check the magazine, if it's plastic or metal with the number 10 stamped on it without a circle around the 10, it's a first or second generation mag that will only hold 8 rounds without ftf problems. The third gen mags have a 10 with a circle around it. Remington will replace the old ones for free. Hope I've been some help. Andre

I've had a pile of 10-22's but I finally bought a 597 from AA for 125.00 (shipping included) that was almost NIB. I was really impressed with it. The sights are great, and I like the feel of the stock. It is very accurate, too.

Congrats on getting your 597. I think you will be happy with it, and it's a great value. I took Andre's suggestion and bought the Volquartsen hammer. Haven't installed it yet but will before year end. Accuracy is great off the bench but that new hammer (and maybe some other trigger work) is needed to achieve some practical accuracy.

I have several rimfire scopes but still need another good one for the 597. I want a variable -- something of the order of 2X on the low end. A Leupold RF Compact 2X-7X costs more than the 597 did. Weaver sells a 2x7 at lower cost and Burris used to have one. Bushnell, Simmons and Tasco all sell rimfire scopes. Any thoughts on the best one to get?

Check with the Burris line. They have great glass. Burris usually gives the % of light transmission & it is usually better than most. My son took a Burris on a Savage 308 & a Leupold on an AR15 to a PD hunt in Wyoming in June. He swore off Leupold in favor of the Burris. I also went to the Burris Balistic Plex mil dot 6x24x50. The cost of the Burris was less than 1/2 that of the Leupold.
