how often do ya take stock off of rifle?

just curious, when you are hunting and it is snowing or raining, how many of you actually take the stock off of the action and barrel and give it a thorough cleaning-lubrication?

has this ever affected your groups after putting it back together?
does it affect glass barrelling at all in your experience. thanks a lot.

Groups could be off by an inch or even more depending on the rifle. I take my stocks off after each day of 'harsh' hunting to wipe moisture off, because I'm not all that worried about being off by an inch at the distances I try to shoot.

I field strip any rifle they gets wet from rain or snow; dry it,clean it and lube it then put it back together. All my rifles are free-floated so I have not detected any change in point of impact All the best...

I am in good company with rem700, Gil and Billy; I remove my rifle stock the evening after a day of hunting in the rain. I dry off the barreled action and stock interior and let them air dry a day or two. I wipe the barreled action with an oil/grease cloth, reassemble and then fire a few rounds to "reseat" the action in the stock. If a gun is glass-bedded, the normal SOP was always to fire a few rounds to "reseat" the action and then all is well.

Good post. Far too many guns that get soaked every deer season do not receive this proper care.

AS TO EFFECTING GROUPS AFTER RE-ASSEMBLY, GEE THE ANIMALS DIDN'T SEEM TO MIND.

I always take a new rifle apart just to learn about it an clean off the grease. Later, if it gets wet I may break it down. After the "new" wears off I seldom remove the stock, sometimes for over 20 year periods.

Well I guess I will be one of the outcasts here and say hardly ever. But funny you should mention it as it is a heck of a snow storm outside today that is what I had and will do today.
I am sure I will find plenty of gunk lol

I do a complete strip down when I first get a rifle. I clean everything and get the lubricant/preservative I want on the rifle.
After that, likely only once a year- after the season I use the rifle for. That way, the zero stays consistent.
