What type of stone or sharpener ?

I have a medium arkansas stone and a barber razor strop stone my fater-in-law gave me many year ago, I spray WD-40 on both, I use the arkansas stone to put edge on, the I use the barber razor strop to put a keen edge on it, then I finish by stropping the knife blade on a piece of leather. It's a little more work but well worth it :)

I use a aluminum oxide ceramic "crock" stick. The ones I use are about 4" long. They never wear out, and the only time I have to use oil on them is when the get so impregnated with metal that they wont sharpen any more (Takes about 5 years of steady sharpening) Then you use a little 3 in 1 household oil on paper towel and it will pull most of the metal right off of them. Also it puts a VERY fine edge so I don't have to use anything BUT them.

12 of them cost $3.49 + S&H at smokey mountain knife works. That is about a ten lifetime supply unless you lose or break them.

I have been using an old Norton Oil Stone, with three sides, for many years. When I had the Wholesale Fish business, the fish cutters used it all day long. It is still sharpening my knives.
All the new fangled systems may be fine,but I have found nothing that does a better job than this example of old technology.

i'm a dmt fan personally. they are diamond hones, all you need is water.

the stone for sharpening braodheads is priceless. what a time saver, and does a great job. and it's precise.

I can't use a stone without havin it end up concave after bout a year or two, so I use this,

It keeps em straight and can sharpen even my big one's to a razor's edge,,

I'm a trapper and I sharpen all my skinning knives with a sharpening system that is mounted on a bench grinder. One wheel has a fine grit on it to put on an edge and the other wheel is made of compressed paper.

It does a good job and it's very fast.

I should have included that the compressed paper side polishes the edge, making it razor sharp.
