Here's the short story...

VENTURA, California (AP) -- A teacher who kept a 40 mm shell on his desk as a paperweight blew off part of his hand when he apparently used the object to try to squash a bug, authorities say.

The 5-inch-long shell exploded Monday while Robert Colla was teaching 20 to 25 students at an adult education class.

Part of Colla's right hand was severed and he suffered severe burns and minor shrapnel wounds to his forearms and torso, fire Capt. Tom Weinell said. No one else was injured. He was reported in stable condition at a hospital.

The teacher slammed the shell down in an attempt to kill something that was buzzing or crawling across the desk, said Fire Marshal Glen Albright.

Colla found the 40 mm round while hunting years ago and "obviously he didn't think the round was live," said Dennis Huston, who teaches computer design alongside Colla.

I'll die if there is a lawsuit over this.

We need a few of those ornaments for our educators out here in Colorado ... seems to be an unremitting amount of ignorance running through our schools these days.

1) Ward Churchill - CU Prof- best reason for doing away with tenure in a real long time.

2) 10th grade teacher who compared GW to Hitler and was recorded by his student

3) Principle in Longmont school who banned the wearing of red, white and blue in the school.

While this was a little more literal in the ignorance catagory (Darwin style), all these examples have to concern you when sending your kid off to school in the morning.

Fabs, you know its coming. Kids parents justified, teacher unjustified but likely. Who pays ... taxpayers of course. Don't worry he'll probably be back in the classroom in no time because he has tenure.

Sure makes me long for the days when all I had to worry about was the kid getting into the wrong cabinets and electrical outlets.

Yeah, well I am planning on having kids in the near future, and I cringe to think how much worse things can get in this country before they actually have to go to school.
