The 22 hornet is a small cased 22 centerfire that has about a 2700-2800 ft velocity with the standard loading. The 22 magnum is a rimfire cartridge with a velocity of approx 2000 ft per second with the standard 40 gr bullet. They are two different animals and they aren't even close in performance. Personally I really like the Hornet and have 2 of them..one is a Ruger 77/22H na the other is a T-C Contender in 22 hornet(14 in bbl. Neat cartridge for certain.

It depends on what type of Ruger you have. If a rifle, you ae in the rifle forum, and it is not a 22 magnum version, no.

If the rifle is a 22 magnum rifle version, you can shoot 22 magnum only, *not* Hornet or 22 LR.

If the rifle is marked 22 LR. L or S then you can *not* shoot 22 magnum or 22 Hornet in it, only 22 LR, Long or shoort.

If the rifle is marked 22 Hornet you can only shoot 22 Hornet centerfire cartridges in it. That would probably be a #1 or #3 single shot.

None of the rimfires can equal what a Hornet can do, they are two entirely different types of cartridges. Hornets are a blast, have an NEF that can easily drop 'chucks to ~150yds.
