staining cheap gun stocks

just bought a marlin 1894 and the wood looks....well, cheap! has anyone stained these stocks before to give it a darker look aswell as a more durable finish? any suggestions?

It appears you have a "hardwood" stock on your rifle. I have several and have stained the stocks to the point they appear to be good old walnut.

There are several good stock stains on the market. I just followed the directions to the letter and had good results. Just be sure to allow the stain to thoroughly dry for a day or two before you apply a boiled linseed oil, or other, top coat finish. If you apply the top coat too soon, the stain will "pull" off the stock. Also, you may need to apply several coats of stain to get the proper color. Good luck.

M70, I had a mossberg that had a cheap stock on it. I didn't stain it as I was going for a "blonde" look. This is one case where "more" is better. The more sanding and the more Tru-oil you use the better. I bet I have 8 coats of Tru-oil on it andit looks great.
