Fuuny thing happened while watching the race today.

While watching the race today my door bell rings, it is one of the farmers that lives down the road. He knew I had a Lab and wanted to know if mine was missing. Said no she is right here. Seems that sometime last week a young black lab made his way to his property and was a very nice and friendly dog but he did not go home. Being an older fella the farmer did not want feed this dog or have him around to get attached to. The farmer thinks the dog was dropped off. And after hearing his story, I looked up and saw a Lab just down the road. I asked if that was him and he said yeah thats him. Soooo being the dumbazz I am I call the dog over. He trots right over and gives me some doggy kisses, and well.......... I guess I got sucker written all over me caus that was about 5:30 this afternoon and it is 9:30 now and I am looking at 2 black labs:D Poor fella was starved he is real thin. he will let you pet him while he eats and plays well with my 2 other dogs. I need to get him to the vet soon and ask around if anyone is missing thier dog. He looks pretty young maybe a year or so, and looks to be full lab. This house is getting full 2 kids, 3 dogs, a cat, and 10 fish:rolleyes: I must be dumber then dirt but damn I got a soft spot for labs.

You just need a bigger yard. Just came downstairs to do some work after playing with Nitro a little bit. Labs are great dogs. Next time you see the farmer, ask him if he has any geese or ducks on his farm that your new buddy can retrieve after you shoot them. That is the least he could do.

welcome to the sucker club. i have a fish hook permanently embedded in my lower lip. but thats all right.

i'll bet that dog will be your most faithful companion. they seem to sense when someone takes them off the hook.

my dog, fritz, is that way. he won't run any farther than he can see me. when he's in the field and he happens to go over a little rise in about two seconds he'll run back and stand on the top of the rise and wait for me to catch up.

one bad thing about labs, they endear themselves to you in a hurry.

As far as labs endearing themselves to their owner, I don't know about that. Nitro was laying on his dog bed upstairs, but as soon as he saw me get two mozzarella sticks out of the fridge, he ran downstairs to join me. I think Nitro is endeared to food.

thats certainly an incentive. fritz thinks he's supposed to eat everytime i do. consquently a couple of months ago i looked at him and he looked like a frankfurter on legs, or a dachshund with an air hose up his backside.

i had a physical last thursday and the nurse weighed me and i almost had a heart attack, i gained 13#. so great grandpa and fritz are now both on a diet.

i hate the word diet. whenever my wife would go on a diet i lost weight and she stayed the same. :(

it was about the same with the bedroom. all she had to do was walk through and she was pregnant. :p

Well thought I would give you guys an update. So far so good. He is well behaved for the most part. Seems like he is pretty much house broken, and has had some form of training. he knows some common commands when he wants to, sit , come stay. He does want to wander off, in no particular direction. Once I realized he had an understanding of "come" I broke out the collar to help him understand who was boss, and he got the point real quick, he came directly back to me and sat at my feet. He is getting along really well with my other Lab and they play alot. Provided no one comes to claim him I think I amy have 2 dogs in the blind next year.

Anouther update. He is a really good dog, but I doubt he will be much of a hunter, atleast anytime soon. At first I did not think he had been abused but the more I work with him and watch him, it is becomeing very clear he was:mad: But if anything he will make a nice family pet, and maybe one day he will turn into a hunter. Atleast I have Raven and I know she will be a good hunter if I can ever get on enough ducks for her to really get the hang of what is going on. 1 duck a season is not enough to really get a good grasp on what is going on. She wants to do it but just has not had enough experience to do it well.

As far as Duke goes he is gun shy, and has no real intrest in fetching a ball, and when he does he does not bring it back half the time, just lets it lay there. But these are things that might work themselves out with some work. But for right now I am just going to let him be and let us gain his trust before I start to push him.

So as of now things are going pretty well, and I hope that one day I'll have 2 dogs to take out to the blind. But right now I just have a nice family dog:)
