Since I’d already dragged the .50cal, then the .54cal caplocks to the range over the holiday weekend, I couldn’t neglect the .45 any longer, so I ran fifty Speer .440s through the .45cal Hawken Cougar this morning…pretty rifle

roundball,

NICE photos and nice gun. Now, what about the rest of the story? How did it shoot, at what range, what propellant, patch type, lube type, etc.?

Finally, how do you clean and preserve your rifle bores?

It's got a beautiful stock on it for sure...I just shoot target loads on the weekends for playing around at 50yds...coke cans, steel hanger, pine cones, etc.

TARGETS
50grns Goex 3F
.018" pillow ticking NL1000 (or Hoppes if it's dry/low humidity)
Hornady (or Speer) .440s

HUNTING
90grns Goex 3F
Oxyoke Wonderwad
.018" TC Prelubed pillow ticking
Hornady .440s

Steaming hot soapy water, scrub brush every time, hot water rinse, bone dry the bore, heavily plaster every square inch of the bore with Natural Lube 1000.

Hey Hobbles...thought you dropped off the face of the Earth...had a good session...up at 5:30, cool front 52 degrees...at the range and shooting by 7:00, packing up to leave by 8:30...not another soul there

Good looking rifle. Sounds like you had a good day at the range.

I've tried my darndest to convert this stock to a Flintlock, but there is just enough variance in the tolerances where the tang is positioned and the lock mortise is cut, that when I drop in a Flint lock and a Flint barrel, the vent is almost at the rear edge of the pan.

I converted another Cougar whose stock is almost as nice...for example if we called the caplock stock a "10", the one I converted to a Flintlock (below) would be an "8.5" or "9", and it converted just fine...
