tried that trick when i went to survival at fairchild afb in washington. my success rate with a single point was zilch. but when i went to a dual point my rate increased dramtically.
rocky can tell you about the school. it was a mind game. each class element got a live rabbit and we had to eat it. guess who they always gave te rabbit to. right, a 2nd lt. and they would look through his files and find one from the biggest city they could find. the instructors knew he knew nothing about animals. the rabbit had to be killed and eaten buy the element. i was the only enlisted guy in my element so guess who got to take away the lt.'s fuzzy little friend and kill it. i'll bet the poor guy had to go to therapy when the school was over with.
with the properly prepared equipment you can spear fish with a stick. i did it. of course when you are hungry it's a big incentive.

so a properly made multi point spear wil eventually catch fish
turned out to be a small (hell.....looked BIG to me !) barracuda that was checking us out. I took a poke at it as it turned away from my facemask and drew blood.
My dive partner then proceeded to EMPHATICALLY "educate" me on the 'cuda's nasty habbit of slashing/attacking flashy objects (like knife blades)
I learned my lesson

Never stuck one with a spear but an arrow/bow....I have used a 3 prong stick that you lower real slow to the fish then pin him to the bottom till ya grab him...now that works ...just watch doing it with a bunch of carp because when they explode, they can almost knock you down.

so you have got one with a three pronged fish spear

Yes but I did not spear them. The prongs are of a branch that has 3 branches at the cut off point that I left about 4 inches long each....this way it does not spear the fish in any way but just holds them to the bottom....stand over the fish, lower real slow till you just about touch the fish then a quick pin to the bottom...

About ten years ago, My two sons and afriend of their's were wild boar hunting in Boone County West Virginia, and where we were camped at was a small pond, spring feed and my oldest son Jason cut a sapling, sharpen the end and he speared a crappie the size of your hand. I saw him do it, not once but twice. I tried it, no luck, but then he's always tried off the wall stuff.

Catdaddy, sorry about not getting back to your question , the sapling was as I remember about 9 feet in length, maybe a foot or two even longer than 9 ft. I remember my son with the sapling sticking back over his shoulder a few feet, when he used it like a spear.

Never with a sharpened stick, just with a frog gig.
