View Full Version : looking for ammo
anyone live near a good, well stocked gun shop ?
I need some .280 Rem ammo and the stores here in MI just dont stock anything on the shelves. AND....they dont want to be bothered ordering any either.
I'm hoping someone can steer me to a shop that I can hit on my way out west (via I-70 or 80)

I shoot the .280 myself so I know about ammo problems. I usually can find everything I want at Cabela's or Midwayusa. Just add the "com" and they both have web site's with fast shipping. Cabela's has a number of locations, Midway is located in MO. I've used many brands and bullets and my gun likes several of them. I used Federal Vital Shok Premium loaded with Nosler 160 grain Accubonds in Africa this past July and had impressive results on everything from Warthog up to Kudu. You can see my report on my African web site (no advertising, just my personal web site about Africa hunting). Also, Federal has introduced other .280 choices so you should be able to get all you need from the above sources. If you have any problems just email me and I'll send you some other sites. LOL
after 30+ min on the phone with the MI store I still didnt get a straight answer as to whether or not they had any on the shelves. Its a couple hour drive one way so Im not driving for nothing.
My A-bolt is already dialed in perfectly with the FailSafe so I'd rather not change ammo if I dont have to before this hunt. Michigan isnt a hotbed for the 280 but I know that shops out west stock more of it.

Fail Safe in .280 will be hard to find. I hear a rumor that Winchester may discontinue them. I checked Cabela's web site and they carry Fail Safe but not in 280. You may have to reload them unless you can find a few on store shelves. You might ask on the Anything Goes forum if anyone has seen them. Some of the guys are sharp on remembering such things. Depends how far west...........I 70 in CO will get you to all kinds of great places,
Bass Pro Shops
Gander Mtn.
Sportmans Warehouse
among others
gave up on the search. I KNOW there are boxes of Failsafes still on the shelves....just cant get anyone to bother to look.
Ended up taking grayghost's suggestion and just ordered the vital shocks from Midway.
If I can find the Failsafes anywhere....I'll take them too !
thanks

When Speer and Federal were bought out, Speer was instructed to stop making rifle cartridges; leave that to Federal. They (Federal) produced my old Speer Nitrex in .280 160gr Grand Slams for one year. Didn't sell enough so they dropped them. Then I tried to find the Fail Safe's in a 160grain. No luck, so I went with the Federal's in Nosler 160gr Accubonds. FIJI, I had no problems taking any of the Plains game in Africa. Kudu, Gemsbok, Blesbok, Warthog, Cape Hartebeast, my second Bushbuck, Impala, etc., all fell to one shot. I did shoot my Black Wildebeast 3 times but all 3 shots were fatal. I chose not to let him suffer as any of us would do, and they don't call them "poor man's Buffalo" for nothing. With good shot placement I think you'll be fine with the Accubonds, they really surprised me, and my PH. Best of luck this season and good hunting, grayghost
