7-Eleven to End Relationship with Venezuela-Backed Citgo

DALLAS — Convenience store operator 7-Eleven Inc. is dropping Venezuela-backed Citgo as its gasoline supplier at more than 2,100 locations and switching to its own brand of fuel.

The retailer said Wednesday it will purchase fuel from several distributors, including Tower Energy Group of Torrance, Calif., Sinclair Oil of Salt Lake City, and Houston-based Frontier Oil Corp.

A spokeswoman for Dallas-based 7-Eleven said its 20-year contract with Citgo Petroleum Corp. ends next week. About 2,100 of 7-Eleven's 5,300 U.S. stores sell gasoline.

Citgo is a Houston-based subsidiary of Venezuela's state-owned oil company, and the foreign parent became a public-relations issue for 7-Eleven because of comments by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

Chavez has called President George W. Bush the devil and an alcoholic. The U.S. government has warned that Chavez is a destabilizing force in Latin America.

7-Eleven spokesman Margaret Chabris said that, "Regardless of politics, we sympathize with many Americans' concern over derogatory comments about our country and its leadership recently made by Venezuela's president Hugo Chavez."

Chabris said a boycott of Citgo gasoline would hurt the 4,000 employees of the U.S. subsidiary, who have no connection to Venezuela.

7-Eleven had been considering creating its own brand of fuel since at least early last year. Company officials said at the time they had spoken with independent fuel distributors.

Just because 7-Eleven drops Citgo doesn't mean that there still aren't Citgo stations out there. Off the top of my head I do not know a single one. Anybody know of a Citgo station that is not part of 7-Eleven?

Two points.

1. Neither the employees of 7-Eleven nor the owners of Citgo stations have anything whatever to do with Venezuela or Chavez, so why would some of us wish them ill?

2. The US will still be buying gasoline/oil from Venezuela/Chavez. It'll just be mixed in with other sources and sent to other brand name stations. Yes, that's a pity in that it supports Chavez. But the alternative is to decrease supply - and increase costs. If you bellyached about $3/gallon gas, don't be so high and mighty now - or swallow your indignation and dig deeper in your wallet.

Agreed Rocky. I still think we should all try to buy better fuel economy vehicles whenever we have to replace our current vehicle. Granted, with gas around $2.00 a gallon right now, most people will not think too much about it when buying their next car. Problem is, cars are long term commitments and God only knows what gas is going to cost next summer or the summer after that.

I know the employees are not part of it/ Like I said I don't wish them ill, I hope they find new better paying jobs and abondone ship. In point of fact I wish that Citgo would go ahead and split with Venezuela over this and the employees and owners would be better off.

OK, this is a bit off thread, but if you want better gas mileage, slow down a bit. I just got back from a trip to New Mexico in my Ford Explorer 4X4. Normally, I drive the 75 MPH when I make the trip and gas mileage around 19.5 MPG average. On this trip, I kind of bit the bullet and drove at 65 MPH and my mileage was 21.6 MPG, a substantial increase IMHO. The trip took about one hour longer which was not all that noticable.
Anyway, it's something you might want to consider.

Most companies that make cars actually tun them for best performance at a certain MPH. Believe it or not a '05 silverado extended cab v6 (Like mine) is tuned (per chevrolet) for 62 MPH.

You are correct btw slowing down can save ALOT of gas. If I have an emergency at work and have to drive 80 to get there I usually burn about 1/4 of a tank. If I am driving in on any normal day at around 65 I burn less than 1/8 of a tank. . . .

Several Alaskan villiages refused to take the free 100 gallons of heating oil that was offered to each family in the native villiages because Chavez insulted our president. That is putting your money where your mouth is because fuel can cost as much as $7 per gallon in these remote villiages. You probably didn't hear much about that down in the lower 48 states did you?

It was in all the major papers here in southeastern Michigan. At least in the 4 of them I see in the news stands. (Detroit Free press, News, Oakland press, and Flint Journal) I say more power to them I also noticed there were donators already makeing up the oil for them so they would not have to worry about running out.

Just this evening my 4x4 was running very low on gas and the only station I saw in the first few miles was CITGO. I drove right by that place without giving it a second thought.

My wife said " what are you doing". I told her that I'd rather take my chances and was willing to push the damn truck if that's what it took.

Fortunately, I made it to a Hess station with about a half gallon left in the tank.
