I hunted PA deer for the first time in 1958 and carried a $13 WWII surplus arm while all my older neighbors carried Winchester 30-30s. Well, near a half century later, I got my first .30-30 and what a nice vintage am it is.
My better half gave me her dad's .30-30 with the old-timey letters and numbers and a serial number that puts it pre-WWII. The rifle (carbine) has a saddle ring on the side of the receiver. A local Agway had ammo on sale last week and I got two boxes each of 150 and 170 grain shells for $7.39 each. I made a trip to the shooting bench and zeroed the old carbine at +1.5 inches at 100 yards with 150s and 170 loads are withing a half-inch of the 150s.
I have old deer hunting attire, lace up high boots, woolrich pants, suspenders and woolrich jacket for pictures to send to the local paper. Now all I need is a PA deer.
