Getting closer with the custom mauser.

The German 98 is coming along. The action is reground, put on a new bolt handle, bolt sleeve, timney trigger, and shilen match barrel chambered in 25-06. Still have to do the straddle floor metal and release. Have a nice stick of triple x English walnut, but I think I'm going to go synthetic and put the blank on something else.

Check out the bolt release, tricked it a little. Made the part that you put your thumb on an oval and checkered it.

Looks great. Similar to gun that I have.
Shilen barrel also. Mine shoots great.
It's a 35 whelen with a fixed 4 power
on it. The great thing is the mauser
action. I did absolutely nothing to my
98 action except changing the fireing
pin and spring. It shoots great.
The guy that tapped it for scope mounts
said he could hardly drill the thing. Case
hardened steel is what makes these things so great after all these years.

Jonesy, have you reshaped the tang at all?
Usually on a 98, there's plenty of metal on the rear tang- you can narrow it a bit, save an ounce or 2 of weight and also give it a bit more of a custom look.

Yeah, the tang has been shaped down. There's not a lot on it that hasn't been reworked or new. I'm kind of starting to get a little anxious to shoot it. I have a couple more that are getting close too. A Mexican Mauser that's had the same done to it and it's in 7X57. Then I also have a Argentine that has been shortened and is chambered in 22-250. I just love what you can do to those Mausers!
