Curious question

Yesterday a guy was talking about a putting a muzzle brake on his 300 Weatherby. I said Vais makes a good brake and it really helps with recoil, but is pretty loud. His response was he wasn't concerned with the recoil but that it would add velocity. I don't quite know how it would but thought I'd throw it out for fodder.
Is this possible or proven?

He was talking 200 - 300 fps.

In reviewing the reloading manuals I guess I could just loan him the 338 RUM it'll push a 180gr bullet that much faster than a 300 Weatherby;) !

Usually, guys are concerned that a brake will REDUCE muzzle velocity. That's a much more sensible concern, due to the loss of gas just before muzzle exit. At worst, however, that's the equivalent of loosing an inch or so of barrel length: inconsequential.

But BOOSTING velocity? I think I'd ask for his scientific reasoning behind that notion.

I too would like to see a scientific explanation of how siphoning off propellant gasses and using that energy to apply force to the RIFLE would cause the bullet to exit faster.

I suspect we won't see it soon.

I'm no engineer, but that was kind of my line of thought. The release of back pressure may cause a loss of speed if anything.

I can see where you might get a small boost in velosity from a muzzle brake, but it would be so small that it would be hard to measure. If you were to thread the end of your barrel and screw on a muzzle brake it would make your barrel longer and even if it was letting off gass it would still give the bullet alittle more push. Weather or not you would get enough more velosity it could be measured would be the question, I would guess that it would, but am guessing that it would be far less than 100 fps.

I have been shooting one on my 300 WBY for 8 yrs other than recoil and noise I don't find a diffrents.
