Ok, I'm heading to Namibia to bow hunt this Aug. I do have a couple of question. Is Aug the in the Dry season? I will be hunting at Duinker safari www.duiker.iway.na
How much does that VAT run?
How much does shipping capes and horns back
Any suggestions on flying there IE airlines.
I live in Anchorage Alaska.
any other suggestion would be great. I'm trying to make sure I don't run into any hidden cost.
Hello Gary, you'll have a great time and a lot of memories!! I'll give a shot at answering some of your questions.
1. Yes, it will be the dry season, i.e., winter. Touch of frost on the pumpkin nights and daytime around 70F or so.
2. VAT, not sure, but I think we got ours written off. I don't know what % it is if you pay. I think since we were out of country and taking items out, it was excused. If we did pay, I don't know what the cost was, but couldn't have been much. Now if you mean VAT on Shipping, yes, we had to pay that, which was about $300, but that went to German customs.
3. Shipping depends, but just for an example, 4 of us shipped horns/skulls in one box & split it, these were the European mounts, cost was $1000, but that was to Germany, so I'm not sure what it would cost to Alaska. We still have shoulder mounts & hides in Windhoek that will be coming early next year, so I'll don't know what the S&H will run on that.
4. Don't know about IE airlines, but I suggest flying to Frankfurt GE and getting on Namibia Airlines.
Keep checking stuff out, and I bet you're looking forward to experiencing Africa, Waidmannsheil, Dom.

Gary,
The Namibian VAT is 15%. It is not applied to trophy fees. If you shop in town, buy gifts;etc. it applies. They are supposed to give you a refund if you spend over a certain amount and keep receipts for proof. I believe there is a place in the airport to apply for the tax refund. My wife and I applied in 2002 and have not received anything back and don't expect to.

Hi Gary: search earlier posts this year. We had some long threads that bsterns started concerning the Taxidermy and shipping end of things. Although you can save $$ on having your mounts done in Africa, the shipping to AK may eat up that savings and then some. You are welcome to email me directly if I can answer any details. Good hunting, grayghost
