I am working at geting my CCW and would like to get a 1911 to carry. Money is a big factor but so is my familys safety. Also what is the best way to conceal one? I live in W. Texas and heat is a big deal 100 is normal down here. I normaly wear jeans and a tuck in button up shirt. What is my best option. I would like any help on the matter.

Thanks

Stephen

SGJ,
In the 1911, the Kimber carry guns are pretty much the best of the best. I have owned a pile of 1911s over the years and the Kimber ultra compact and ultra carry guns are my favorites.

You want to carry a 1911, concealed, wearing jeans and a tucked in button down shirt in 100 degree heat.... ain't going to happen.

I live in Florida, my carry gun, for the same reasons you outline, is the little KelTec 380. With a hankerchief over, it rides in the back pocket without notice. If you really want to hide it, in plain sight, it fits in the shirt pocket.

I am a firm beleiver in not telling folks what to carry - only you can firgure out your priorities.

I live where 100 degrees and 95% humidity is not unheard of but normally in the hottest of summer it only hits 95-95.

I usually wear a short sleeve light cotton over shirt (either a "hawaiian" or a "bush" shirt) with a sleeveless "T" under it. I usually carry 2 1911s (normally full sized but sometimes one is a Commander). I use OWB holsters, since there is too much of *me* instide my waistband already. If I wore IWB a tail out polo with just a little extra size would be OK but two guns IWB would be uncomortable (though I have worn a lot more than that for class demos - but I would not have wanted to carry them all day long, a couple of hours was enough!).

Personally, I am not willing to give up performance for convienience. I.O.W., I dress around the guns rather than attenuate performance for comfort.

Others choose another way. It is their life and I certainly cannot choose for them. I wish them well.

For sure, any gun is better than no gun though I tend to agree with Jeff Cooper, if it is a .25 dont load it...... (BTW, if I limited my view to the folks I personally knew who used a .380, they would probably have been better off if it wasn't loaded either but there are certainly people who it has worked for so I guess that is just an anomoly).

Good luck!

I carry a full size Wilson Combat 45 and luckily I don't have to worry about concealed carry as such. When working on the ranch here in the summer I carry a single action in 357 or 45 in a cross draw holster. Mainly for snakes and coyotes. Use shot loads and ball for them. My wifes carry gun is an old S&W Chief's Special with 110 gr HP's. It's what she is happy with and she can shoot it pretty darn well.

For me around here with weather going from -40 in the winter to above 100 in the summer sometimes it pays to be versitile. I carry a Para Ord Tac Four 45ACP in a IWB holster this I found easy to carry and very concealable too. I am a firm believer in compromise so I chose the caliber I wanted and found that this commander sized Hi-cap with Houge over molded figer grooved grips filled my big hands the best. I have carried and concealed this outfit in just shorts and a T-shirt during the summer to pants and a coat in the winter. I also think that best carry for weapon anyone is one that they can carry, shoot, and fits realy good. Choose what caliber you like as for me I am partial to the 40S&W, .357Sig being the minimum and the 45ACP being my personal choice.

I carry a Colt Combat Commander more than any of my other handguns. I have found Sam Andrews's" McDaniels II" the most comfortable IWB holster.

I carry a 1911A1, have fitted the slide, match barrel and bushing, target trigger...it'l go about 3 1/2 lbs. Changed all springs, polished ramp and innerds...thing shoots as well as any NM, Gold Cup or Clark that I ever had!
Butter smooth...looks it's miles....not a Kimber. But, this one is mine and no one else has it!Small of back or CC Jacket.....It eats
Silver Tips very effectively!

I carry several different handguns, depending on the time of yr, and the amount of clothing I, and the perp will be wearing.

I have main carry handguns in 9mm, to 41 Rem Mag,and the 45 acps with back ups from 22Win Mag double derringer to a 357 double derringer, and one little five shot S&W snubby. I also have a little Berretta 32acp, and several small easy to hide 22 simi autos, that are far better than depending on the good will of criminals!

MY favorite is a Kimber Pro Carry II 45acp, next is a Astra A-75 9mm , both small but very accurate, and easy to shoot well, and conceal. In winter, when I'm mostly outside, I carry a full size 1911 gov model 45acp in a shoulder rig. or a 41 mag Ruger blackhawk revolver, also in a shoulder rig. The last two are only when out on the ranch running fence, or checking gates. Bot carried under my coat, but on top of my shirt. In town, I most times will have the Kimber pro carry II, in a IWB McDanial's holster. Sometimes if I'm going into a particularly rough neahborhood, I will also carry a little Beretta Tomcat 32 acp in a pocket holster, as a back up!

One thing sure, unless I'm required to go into a posted area, I am always armed!

I use a Blackhawk holster but they are not cheap at about $50.
