I am itching for a new toy and its gonna be predominately a target/g-hog toy. its still a toss between a 17 and a 22wmr. i see recently cci has announced a .22 vmax 30gr bullet flying at 2300 from the barrel. that sounds like a nice little bullet. not to mention if just plinking 22 mag ammo has to be cheaper than 17hmr. would you guys rather a fast 22 mag over a 17 whatever?

Despite all the hoopla about the rimfire 17s, yeah, I think I'd rather have a .22 WMR. Especially for g'hogs, where even the .22 WMR is a bit feeble, by my standards.

My opinion is that the 17 rf's probably are at their best on ground squirrels and prairie dogs- nothing bigger.
A woodchuck is a surprisingly tough critter. I'd pick the 22 mag, too.

sorry i screwed up the thread name i was going for vmas bullet.
i was just thinking along the lines of a 30 gr vmax at 2300 has got to be better for hogs than a 17 gr at 2500. (despite the KE formula)
yes i too have seen them take a hard hit and keep on truckin, back when i was good with a 22, one took off from my feet, i hit him 4 times out of five before he stopped making progress

Like most of the (lucky!) youngsters back in Illinois in the 50s, farmers encouraged me to wander their hay fields and shooting every groundhog I could. My .22 worked - but not as well as a larger caliber would have. Had to be close, too.

Many was the hour I spent laying flat in the alfalfa or peeking out from behind a treetrunk until a g'hog peeped out. Many times there was nothing but a half head and an eyeball to shoot at. Got my share, though.

If all I had were a rimfire, the .22 Mag would definitely be my choice. I'd pick the most accurate expanding bullet (no FMJs) from my rifle and do my best.

But I'd MUCH rather have a Hornet.

man i just wasnt meant to spell that bullets name. if all you had was a rimfire? funny you should say so, a few of the farms i hunt are in a county where centerfires are a no no. other wise with out a doubt i would be shooting something bigger. now for those farms i shoot velocitors, or some times some big old powRbelts from my omega fixes hogs quite well
