Rem 700 or Savage

Okay, I'm not real knowledgeable regarding rifles.

I am trying to decide between a Remmington 700 VLS and a Savage 12BVSS. Both rifles seem to be very similar in physical aspects, such as barrel length (26" is as short as I want to go).

I have pretty much decided that .243 is the caliber of my preference.

My intended use for this rifle will be hogs, yotes, bobcats, and similar sized critters. Maybe even whitetails, though I do have other firearms for deer. I'm looking at ranges out to maybe 300 yards (but probably much less).

I've been trying to read everything I can find about these two rifles, but everything is positve for both - making the decision even harder.

So, if anyone or everyone could give me some advice I'd greatly appreciate it.

I also have questions regarding scopes, but I'll leave it at the rifle for now.

Hi Feathermax, I've been looking for a new 243Win also.
Already have a VLS in 308Win and it's a great rifle.

Am looking at a Savage VLP (Product #18151) in 243Win which is a new chambering for the VLP-series. That rifle has starting shipping to dealers.

A friend purchased a VLP in 22-250 and is pleased with the rifle.
The VLP is the first Savage that feels more like a rifle than a 2x4 to me.

Savage is having some trouble with an outside source who handles their website updates so things aren't up to speed yet in much of their site for 2007.
The twist will be a 1in9 or so and should be able to stabilize a bullet up to the 105gr Amax.

I have both savage and rem and and can say i think you would get a better deal on a savage.
It tends to be a person choice

I own both. Savage makes highly functional, accurate rifles. So does Remington.

Which one feels and looks best to you? That should be your only worry.

For nuts like me that are into wildcatting the Savage is the best choice because I can change barrel on it myself so easily. If your not into changeing barrels eather are good guns. I would recomand you get the one that you can get the best but on.

It's really hard to say which one "feels" the best. Local retailers don't stock the models I'm considering. There are now two Savage rifles and one Remmington I'm considering, unfortunately I cannot put my hands on all three.

I guess what I'm looking for is one more accurate than the other? Is one more mechanically sound than the other?

Every rifle is a law unto itself..but even with saying that...the one nice fearure of the Savage other than the tigger is the fact that you can swap barrels out pretty easily if ya want to get an aftermarket bbl. I'm kinda fumble fingered and even I can do that one. Savage has truly "come up in the world"

i've put some serious time in with my brother's 22-250 VLS, and it's a very good rifle. Extremely accurate, very reliable, and a lot of fun to shoot. Don't have a lot of experience with the savage rifles, but it would be difficult to go wrong either way. I'd probably lean towards the remmy, just because I'm used to shooting them. JMHO

I don't think you can predict which brand will be more accurate. Accuracy is a complicated combination of gun and load that has to be discovered for each rifle. There are no guarantees.

On the other hand, I bet (I'm making this up so if you know the truth, just tell me) that differences in the average level of accuracy from a year's worth of production from either Savage or Rem. would be irrelevant.

Although the actions are quite different, both have long histories of being absolutely reliable.

Everyone here is saying almost the same thing, really; we can't tell you which is better for you. There is nothing on which to base the call except a couple of personal preferences. Don't agonize. Just pick one and go shooting.

I would pick Savage over Remington just for the ACCUTRIGGER. I owned both, and liked them both, but am a Savage nut, always have been.........so I say 'Heads!'

Yes I did make a choice. I have decided on the Savage.
I went to a local dealer. They checked various wholesalers and there wasn't one available. I was told it would be at least a month. Maybe its time to try again.
Unfortunately I have a fairly long list of projects I wanted to get done this spring/early summer: Put a 500 ft driveway in, finish insulating my house, panel the whole interior, new metal roof, new siding, new foundation, landscape around the house, put in food plots, etc....
I haven't been thinking too much about toys that don't get some work done.

doggone i got a 243 rem 700adl all black with a bushnell 4x14 x40
with adjustable objective ,maybe 30 rounds thru it in fact i think i still have a box of winchesters 100gr and a case for 390.00.

three problems it's not a 700 vls and it has a plastic stock and i'm in mi.
