45l/c loads?

well finally got a custom 45l/c 14"from coyote guns just wandering where to start on loading this slow monster? any one care to offer suggestions starting with 300gr noslers fl point

Did you say a 14" barrel? Very odd, unless it's a T/C Contender or Encore pistol. Too short to be a legal carbine.

Can't help with 300-gr bullets, either. I never loaded anything above 260 grains, and never have loaded more than a handful of +P loadings for my revolvers. I found that a 260 at 1000 fps or a bit under is plenty for anything not extinct.

hey rocky i knew the guru would have and idea on this subject! grandkids ok?mines fine,anyway i had paul build me a 14" 45lc
no 410 chamber strictly to short rang deer&boar hunt i know they're slow for the most part but firgured the barrel lngth might allow me to heat it up a bit.....sat aroung 1100-1150 somewhere
around there atleast 1000fps .... thanks big kev.....


p .s. it's going on my g/2 or ols contender frame...

I see. Interesting. Okay, you can find hotter loads, but none that kill any deader than Hank Williams Jr's favorite load:

Hard 260 SWC lead w/ gas check
20 to 21.0 of H4227 (IMR is close, but sometimes faster, start at 19.0 with IMR)
CCI 350 magnum primer
A medium to heavy crimp

I've used WW, RP and Federal brass with no difference in outcome at all, so your choice. My 4 5/8" Ruger churns out 1000 fps with this load, your longer barrel (with no cylinder gap) should give a bit more. With any critter less than five feet thick, watch the backstop - this load will penetrate five feet of critter! You'll see some unburnt 4227. Ignore it.

My Serria manual has 7 different powders for the 300 gn. bullet and they are listed up to 1,500 fps in a 16 in. barrel. My favorite powder for big heavy bullets in handguns is Win. 296 so here is the loads for it. Starting load is 18.6 at 1,300 and max. load is 21.5 at 1,500. You can load H-110 to these same charges and velosities. I would guess that you will lose abt. 100 fps per in or abt. 200 fps. , but 1,300 will still have alittle punch left. ;)

Thanks catfish these are getting me started ,and i like the 296 works good &flows good and i think around 1300 fps with a 300gr would stop anything i'll see around here! thanks again

Can't add much to what is already listed. But I have a project in the works when things low down that you may be interested in. That is to cut down the 454 Cassual case to 45 Colt to handle the hotter laads, use small rifle primer .for hotter flame with ball powders.
