I got carried away and stripped the reciever holes while mounting my scope base. ARGH! I have never done this before... Before I call a gunsmith can some one tell me what to expect in the way of cost ect...

Thanks

sometimes you can re-thread with a tap and Brownells has oversize 6-48 screws you can buy. Also you could redrill the holes with a drill and re-tap to 8-40 screws. Midway has 6-48 and 8-40 drill bits and taps.

Now down to the nitty gritty, if you don't have a drill press or a steady hand I highly suggest you call a smith.

Some smiths in this area charge $20 a hole to to redrill and tap. Frankly if you don't have the proper tools and knowledge the price is worth it. Sometimes they will re-mount the scope and boresight it also.

Good luck, Bill

I have a Win. Model 70 that had worn out receiver threads. So I bought the oversize 6-48 screws and tap from Brownells and fixed it. However I should also mention that the oversize screws were just barely too big to go through the holes in the base of the scope mounts, so I had to drill them out slightly bigger. No big deal though, and I've had no problems whatsoever. So that's one solution or just go with the bigger 8-40 screws like Bill suggested. 'Course if you go with 8-40 screws I'm pretty sure you'll need new bases designed to work with these larger screws.
