taurus 45

A friend of mine won the Taurus thunderbolt 45 the other day. The question is what kind of ammo should be used in it. Is there a difference in the 45 and 45 colt and 45acp...what is the differences?...I guess he tried to shoot it with what the gun dealer gave him but it would not fire. Any help?...thanks.....is this a good rifle?....a good use for it?

45 LC is a rimmed round that is a lot longer than the rimless 45ACP. In no way does it interchange!LC headspaces on the rim, the 45ACP stops on the case mouth!From what I have read on the Thunderbolt, it is chambered for the 45LC.

Could be, if using 45ACP, the hammer/firing pin was driving the whole round forward into the chamber.....
Sad, but I've had some major gun shops try to sell me 45LC instead of ACP!

Ok so the colt 45 cowboy rounds were bought.....now the thing shot well.. but another question is what would cause the empty case to be burnt along one side and quite a bit of blow back to the face when shot?....Got stung a few times.....this is a pump....thanks....I just figured it was too hot a load????..still factory ammo..

Cowboy rounds are not jacketed and tend to burn a little dirty but you should be good.
I would try some other rounds if the problim persists contact taurus they have one of the best warrentys there is on the market.

the correct ammo for using in the firearm should be stamped into the barrel or on the reciever, but i would suggest you contact taurus or take the rifle to a licensed gunsmith to determine the correct caliber and ammo to be used in the firearm if there is any question or operational difficulties.

Don is correct, the caliber should be clearly marked on the gun.

In any case, you should not be experiencing blow-back. Factory 45 LC ammo is often loaded "light" for Cowboy Action Shooting and its possible your brass is not expanding enough to properly seal the chamber. On the other hand, you may have a headspace problem or the gun may be firing when not in full battery. Any of these issues could cause damage to the gun or injury to the shooter. I suggest you talk to Taurus before experimenting further.

Rather than being to hot, the loads are too weak! They are not developing enough chamber pressure to seal the brass to the chamber walss, allowing blow-back! the so-called "COWBOY" loads are designed to be just powerfull enough to punch through paper targets in COWBOY compitition, without much recoil! Actually they are simply not very good 45LC loads. Get some jacketed bullet loads, and I think your problem witll be long gone!

The 45LC is a very good rifle cartridge, and in short barreled carbines, make a fine 100 yd whitetail rifle! :D
